[QUOTE="SWC75, post: 4071824, member: 289"] The last few years I’ve attempted to quantify team’s performances against ranked teams, (historically a big factor in decisions made about getting into playoffs) with a system that gives points to teams for the ranking of their opponents and adds or subtracts the point differential in their games, (adds in a win, subtracts in a loss). The ‘ranking’ points are 25 for playing a #1 ranked team, 24 for playing a #2 ranked team, etc., down to 1 point for playing a 25th ranked team. These points are easily computed by subtracting the ranking number from 26, (26-1 = 25; 26-25 =1, etc.). Over the course of the season, I add the points earned by each team in their games against ranked teams as a sort of standings but have always maintained that this is just one thing to look at in evaluating the team, not a final overall ranking. Last year I added a new wrinkle to the basketball version of this. I totaled the points each ranked team’s opponent earned against them, (positive or negative) to get a measure of how well the ranked teams performed in these games. I then added those points together with the points against ranked teams to make my NCAA picks and it worked out pretty well so I decided to try it for football. The numbers will gain meaning each week and should be very interesting by the end of the season. One thing I’ve found is that when ranked teams play each other, it works better if I just keep track of “against ranked teams” Example: #5 Georgia beat #3 Clemson 10-3 Georgia +30 Clemson -30 #3 Clemson lost to #5 Georgia 3-10 Clemson +14 Georgia -14 If you add them together Georgia gets +16 and Clemson -16 yet the game was decided by 7 points. So the first figure is “against ranked teams and the second figure “as a ranked team against an unranked team”. WEEK 13 (11/25-27) Michigan beat #2 Ohio State 42-27 Michigan +39 both ranked North Texas beat #22 Texas-San Antonio 45-23 North Texas +26 Texas-SA -26 Minnesota beat #14 Wisconsin 23-13 Minnesota +22 Wisconsin -22 Auburn lost to #3 Alabama 22-24 Auburn +21 Alabama -21 Oklahoma State beat #10 Oklahoma 37-33 Oklahoma State +20 both ranked Oklahoma lost to #7 Oklahoma State 33-37 Oklahoma +15 both ranked Texas Tech lost to #8 Baylor 24-27 Texas Tech +15 Baylor -15 Louisiana State beat #15 Texas A&M 27-24 Louisiana State +14 Texas A&M -14 Penn State lost to #12 Michigan State 27-30 Penn State +11 Michigan State -11 Southern California lost to #13 Brigham Young 31-35 Southern California +9 Brigham Young -9 Mississippi State lost to #9 Mississippi 21-31 Mississippi State +7 Mississippi -7 Ohio State lost to #4 Michigan 27-42 Ohio State +7 both ranked Oregon State lost to #11 Oregon 29-38 Oregon State +6 Oregon -6 Nebraska lost to #16 Iowa 21-28 Nebraska +3 Iowa -3 North Carolina lost to #20 North Carolina State 30-34 North Carolina +2 NC State -2 East Carolina lost to #4 Cincinnati 13-35 East Carolina 0 Cincinnati 0 Boise State lost to #21 San Diego State 16-27 Boise State -6 San Diego State +6 Colorado lost to #19 Utah 13-28 Colorado -8 Utah -8 Syracuse lost to #17 Pittsburgh 14-31 Syracuse -8 Pittsburgh +8 Stanford lost to #6 Notre Dame 14-45 Stanford -11 Notre Dame +11 Missouri lost to #25 Arkansas 17-34 Missouri -16 Arkansas +16 Georgia Tech lost to #1 Georgia 0-45 Georgia Tech -20 Georgia +20 Boston College lost to #18 Wake Forest 10-41 Boston College -23 Wake Forest +23 Connecticut lost to #24 Houston 17-45 Connecticut -26 Houston +26 South Carolina lost to #23 Clemson 0-30 South Carolina -27 Clemson +27 Top 10 Against Ranked Teams through Week 11 Georgia +149 Ohio State +132 Alabama +107 Penn State +94 Iowa +89 Arkansas +83 Utah +76 Michigan +74 Auburn +72 Purdue +69 Syracuse is at -22 after the Pittsburgh game.
