I’ve decided to simplify this. The last couple of years I kept track of how teams playing ranked teams did and how ranked teams did against unranked teams. The latter was too heavily influenced by schools that set up their non-conference schedules with uncompetitive opponents. It also took too much of my time. I’ll stick to keeping track of how teams did against ranked teams. The formula is to give teams points based on the ranking of the team they paid: 25 points for playing a #1 ranked team, 24 for #2, 23 for #3, down to 1 point for playing #25. (A shortcut: subtract the number of the ranking from 26). Then you add in the net point differential of the game. Examples: Central Michigan lost to #12 Oklahoma State 44-58. The Chips get 14 points for playing the #12 team but lose 14 for losing to that team 44-58. Net points: Zero. I’ll still list them because they’ve played a ranked team, but their point total is zero. West Virginia lost to #17 Pittsburgh 31-38. They get 9 points for playing the #17 team but lost 7 points for the game result for a net of 2 points. Let’s see who had the best result each week and who accumulates the most points over the season. Championship Week Utah beat #4 Southern California 47-24 = +45 points Clemson beat #23 North Carolina 39-10 = +32 points Georgia beat #14 Louisiana State 50-30 = +32 points Tulane beat #22 Central Florida 45-28 = +21 points Kansas State beat #3 Texas Christian 31-28 = +20 points Texas Christian lost to #10 Kansas State 28-31 = +13 points Louisiana State lost to #1 Georgia 30-50 = +5 points Purdue lost to #2 Michigan 22-43 = +3 points Southern California lost to #11 Utah 24-47 = -8 points Central Florida lost to #18 Tulane 28-45 = -9 points North Carolina lost to #9 Clemson 10-39 = -12 points Comment: Utah was behind 3-17 and won the rest of the game 44-7. Clemson was behind 0-7 and won the rest of the game 39-3. Georgia was up 35-7, then held off a comeback, 15-23. Top 25 through WEEK 13 Tennessee +135 points Georgia +132 points Texas Christian +121 points Kansas State +115 points Notre Dame +110 points Alabama +108 points Texas A&M +104 points Clemson +100 points Michigan +86 points Utah +74 points South Carolina +68 points Kentucky +67 points Texas +67 points Oregon +62 points Louisiana State +61 points Louisville +61 points Ohio State +59 points Washington +53 points UCLA +45 points Oklahoma +36 points Arkansas +35 points Mississippi +33 points Wake Forest +32 points Florida +31 points Illinois +30 points North Carolina State +30 points The worst performance against ranked teams so far is that of Vanderbilt (-117 points). The weekly best performances: WEEK 1 Georgia beat #11 Oregon 49-3 = +61 points WEEK 2 Kentucky beat #12 Florida 26-16 = +24 points And Texas lost to #1 Alabama 19-20 = +24 points WEEK 3 Oregon beat #12 Brigham Young 41-20 = +35 points WEEK 4 Kansas State beat #6 Oklahoma 41-34 = +27 points WEEK 5 Texas Christian beat #18 Oklahoma 55-24 = +39 points WEEK 6 Tennessee beat #25 Louisiana State 40-13 = +28 points WEEK 7 Michigan beat #10 Penn State 41-17 = +40 points WEEK 8 Louisiana State beat #7 Mississippi 45-20 = +44 points WEEK 9 Kansas State beat #9 Oklahoma State 48-0 = +65 points WEEK 10 Notre Dame beat #4 Clemson 35-14 = +43 points WEEK 11 Alabama beat #11 Mississippi 30-24 = +21 points WEEK 11 Washington beat #8 Oregon 37-34 = +21 points WEEK 12 South Carolina beat #5 Tennessee 63-38 = +46 points WEEK 13 Michigan beat #2 Ohio State 45-23 = +46 points Championship Week Utah beat #4 Southern California 47-24 = +45 points The top ten single game performances: WEEK 9 Kansas State beat #9 Oklahoma State 48-0 = +65 points WEEK 1 Georgia beat #11 Oregon 49-3 = +61 points WEEK 13 Michigan beat #2 Ohio State 45-23 = +46 points WEEK 12 South Carolina beat #5 Tennessee 63-38 = +46 points Championship Week Utah beat #4 Southern California 47-24 = +45 points WEEK 9 Tennessee beat #19 Kentucky 44-6 = +45 points WEEK 8 Louisiana State beat #7 Mississippi 45-20 = +44 points WEEK 9 Louisville beat #10 Wake Forest 48-21 = +43 points WEEK 10 Notre Dame beat #4 Clemson 35-14 = +43 points WEEK 7 Michigan beat #10 Penn State 41-17 = +40 points WEEK 10 Georgia beat #1 Tennessee 27-13 = +39 points WEEK 5 Texas Christian beat #18 Oklahoma 55-24 = +39 points
