I’ve decided to simplify this. The last couple of years I let track of how teams playing ranked teams did and how ranked teams did against unranked teams. The latter was too heavily influenced by schools that set up their non-conference schedules with uncompetitive opponents. It also took too much of my time. I’ll stick to keeping track of how teams did against ranked teams. The formula is to give teams points based on the ranking of the team they paid: 25 points for playing a #1 ranked team, 24 for #2, 23 for #3, down to 1 point for playing #25. (A shortcut: subtract the number of the ranking from 26). Then you add in the net point differential of the game. Examples: Central Michigan lost to #12 Oklahoma State 44-58. The Chips get 14 points for playing the #12 team but lose 14 for losing to that team 44-58. Net points: Zero. I’ll still list them because they’ve played a ranked team but their point total is zero. West Virginia lost to #17 Pittsburgh 31-38. They get 9 points for playing the #17 team but lost 7 points for the game result for a net of 2 points. Let’s see who had the best result each week and who accumulates the most points over the season. WEEK ONE (None of the ranked teams played in Week Zero) Georgia beat #11 Oregon 49-3 = +61 points Ohio State beat #5 Notre Dame 21-10 = +32 points Florida beat #7 Utah 29-26 = +22 points Notre Dame lost to #2 Ohio State 10-21 = +13 points East Carolina lost to #13 North Carolina State 20-21 = +12 points Arkansas beat #23 Cincinnati 31-24= +10 points West Virginia lost to #17 Pittsburgh 31-38 = +2 points Central Michigan lost to #12 Oklahoma State 44-58 = 0 points Cincinnati lost to #19 Arkansas 24-31 = 0 points Texas-San Antonio lost to #24 Houston 35-37 = 0 points Georgia Tech lost to #4 Clemson 10-41 = -9 points Sam Houston lost to Texas A&M 0-31 = -11 points Western Michigan lost to #15 Michigan State 13-35 = -11 points Troy lost to #21 Mississippi 10-28 = -13 points Texas-El Paso lost to #9 Oklahoma 13-45 = -15 points Miami University lost to #20 Kentucky 13-37 = -18 points Oregon lost to #3 Georgia 3-49 = -23 points Colorado State lost to #8 Michigan 7-51 = -26 points South Florida lost to #25 Brigham Young 21-50 = -28 points Illinois State lost to #18 Wisconsin 0-38 = -30 points Utah State lost to #1 Alabama 0-55 = -30 points Virginia Military lost to #22 Wake Forest 10-44 = -30 points Rice lost to #14 Southern California 14-66 = -40 points Albany lost to #10 Baylor 10-69 = -44 points Bethune Cookman lost to #16 U of Miami 13-70 = -47 points Comments: Most of them were blow-out games vs. over-matched teams but Georgia made a statement that, despite losing 15 players to the NFL draft. Ohio State and Notre Dame had a good confrontation and Florida might be on the way back. Georgia’s point total in this system, +61 is impressive but it’s bene topped several times since I’ve bene keeping track of these things. Ohio State beat a #11 Nebraska team 62-3 in 2016, which got them +75. When Syracuse lost to Virginia Tech 0-62 in 1999, we were ranked #16 (72 points for the Hokies) and when we lost to U of Miami 0-59 in 2001, we were ranked #14 (71 points for the ‘Canes).
