[QUOTE="SWC75, post: 2432064, member: 289"] This year I will be again charting how teams have done “against ranked teams”, which is something that always comes up at the end of the year when the arguments over who should be in the NCAA tournament start. As usual, this is not meant to end those arguments, just to give those making them something to look at in forming their opinions. This is just one thing to look at. But I think it’s a big thing. I’m going to do it a bit differently this year. The old procedure was that I would first grant teams playing ranked teams a certain number of points based on who they are playing. If you played the #1 team, (I use the AP- writer’s poll for continuity), you get 25 points. If you are playing the #2 team, you get 24 points, etc. down to getting 1 point for playing the #25 team. I call these “schedule points”. Here’s a chart to make it simple: 1-25, 2-24, 3-23, 4-22, 5-21, 6-20, 7-19, 8-18, 9-17, 10-16, 11-15, 12-14, 13-13, 14-12, 15-11, 16-10, 17-9, 18-8, 19-7, 20-6, 21-5, 22-4, 23-3, 24-2, 25-1. (Of course you can always just subtract the ranking from 26. That will work every time.) Then I look at the point differential in the actual game. If you defeated the ranked team, you add the number of points you won by to the schedule points. If you lost to that team, you subtract the margin you lost by from the schedule points. (I call these ‘game’ points.) The difference between this year and last year if that I didn’t count any deficit: if you got to zero, you got zero. This year I’m going to try to record negative points, too, so a team can get full ‘credit’ for a really bad performance. WEEK 7 New Mexico State beat #6 U of Miami 63-54 = +29 points UCLA beat #7 Kentucky 83-75 = +27 points Wofford beat #5 North Carolina 79-75 = +25 points San Diego State beat #12 Gonzaga 72-70 = +16 points Marshall lost to #9 Xavier 77-81 = +13 points Northern Kentucky lost to #8 Texas A&M 58-64 = +12 points Northern Iowa lost to #9 Xavier 67-77 = +7 points Ohio State lost to #5 North Carolina 72-86 = +7 points Arkansas State lost to #11 Wichita State 80-89 = +6 points Florida Gulf Coast lost to #11 Wichita State 65-75 = +5 points Buffalo lost to #8 Texas A&M 73-89 = +2 points Hawaii lost to #6 U of Miami 57-75 = +2 points Hofstra lost to #1 Villanova 71-95 = +1 point Furman lost to #21 Tennessee 61-66 = 0 points William & Mary lost to #15 Texas Christian 75-86 = 0 points Fordham beat #10 West Virginia 69-86 = -1 point Connecticut lost to #18 Arizona 58-73 = -7 points Texas-Arlington lost to #25 Creighton 81-90 = -8 points Texas Southern lost to #15 Texas Christian 72-91 = -8 points Charleston Southern lost to #24 Florida State 58-69 = -9 points Manhattan lost to #23 Seton Hall 62-74 = -9 points Stanford lost to #14 Kansas 54-75 = -9 points Longwood lost to #3 Arizona State 61-95 = -11 points Southern University lost to #18 Baylor 60-80 = -12 points Cleveland State lost to #20 Cincinnati 62-81 = -13 points Wake Forest lost to #21 Tennessee 60-79 = -14 points Indiana-Purdue at Indianapolis lost to #12 Gonzaga 71-101 = -16 points Pacific lost to #3 Arizona State 65-104 = -16 points Northwestern lost to #17 Oklahoma 78-104 = -17 points Long Beach State lost to #2 Michigan State 60-102 = -18 points Savannah State lost to #13 Virginia 47-78 = -18 points Wagner lost to #23 Seton Hall 68-89 = -18 points Hampton lost to #13 Virginia 48-82 = -21 points Houston Baptist lost to #2 Michigan State 62-107 = -21 points Abilene Christian lost to #21 Texas Tech 47-74 = -22 points Arkansas-Pine Bluff lost to #20 Cincinnati 49-77 = -22 points North Dakota State lost to #18 Arizona 53-83 = -22 points Coppin State lost to #10 West Virginia 38-77 = -23 points Northwestern Louisiana lost to #17 Oklahoma 68-105 = -28 points Florida Atlantic lost to #21 Texas Tech 54-90 = -31 points Omaha lost to #14 Kansas 64-109 = -33 points Tennessee State lost to #16 Purdue 48-97 = -39 points Evansville lost to #4 Duke 40-104 = -42 points Southern Mississippi lost to #24 Florida State 45-98 = -51 points South Carolina State lost to #25 Creighton 62-116 = -53 points Comments: The conference season can’t begin too soon. I’m tired of caring what Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis does or why they call it that. The Top 25 listed below barely changed. Meanwhile, no ACC team got out of the pre-conference season unscathed. Conference teams have lost 37 games to teams from other leagues, an average of 3 per team. We are not alone…. Top 25 Michigan State +92 points Texas A&M +70 points Purdue +67 points Arizona State +61 points Southern Methodist +54 points Duke +53 points Florida +52 points Texas Tech +52 points Xavier +51 points Florida State +38 points Gonzaga +37 points Tennessee +37 points Oklahoma +34 points Boston College +30 points North Carolina State +30 points Villanova +30 points Wichita State +29 points Nebraska +28 points Arkansas +26 points Western Kentucky +25 points Wofford +25 points Kansas +23 points Texas +22 points Seton Hall +21 points Rutgers +20 points Washington +20 points Syracuse got +8 points from the loss to Kansas The worst team so far is Savannah State with -119 points.
