This year I will be again charting how teams have done “against ranked teams”, which is something that always comes up at the end of the year when the arguments over who should be in the NCAA tournament start. As usual, this is not meant to end those arguments, just to give those making them something to look at in forming their opinions. This is just one thing to look at. But I think it’s a big thing. I’m going to do it a bit differently this year. The old procedure was that I would first grant teams playing ranked teams a certain number of points based on who they are playing. If you played the #1 team, (I use the AP- writer’s poll for continuity), you get 25 points. If you are playing the #2 team, you get 24 points, etc. down to getting 1 point for playing the #25 team. I call these “schedule points”. Here’s a chart to make it simple: 1-25, 2-24, 3-23, 4-22, 5-21, 6-20, 7-19, 8-18, 9-17, 10-16, 11-15, 12-14, 13-13, 14-12, 15-11, 16-10, 17-9, 18-8, 19-7, 20-6, 21-5, 22-4, 23-3, 24-2, 25-1. (Of course you can always just subtract the ranking from 26. That will work every time.) Then I look at the point differential in the actual game. If you defeated the ranked team, you add the number of points you won by to the schedule points. If you lost to that team, you subtract the margin you lost by from the schedule points. (I call these ‘game’ points.) The difference between this year and last year if that I didn’t count any deficit: if you got to zero, you got zero. This year I’m going to try to record negative points, too, so a team can get full ‘credit’ for a really bad performance. WEEK 8 Alabama beat #5 Texas A&M 79-57 = +43 points Butler beat #1 Villanova 101-93 = +33 points Texas Tech beat #18 Baylor 77-53 = +32 points Arizona beat #3 Arizona State 84-78 = +29 points Boston College lost to #9 Virginia 58-59 = +16 points Marquette lost to #6 Xavier 87-91 = +16 points DePaul lost to #6 Xavier 72-77 = +15 points Florida State lost to #4 Duke 93-100 = +15 points Oklahoma beat #10 Texas Christian 90-89 = +15 points Oklahoma State lost to #7 West Virginia 79-85 = +13 points Texas Christian lost to #12 Oklahoma 89-90 = +13 points Arkansas beat #19 Tennessee 95-93 = +9 points Duke beat #24 Florida State 100-93 = +9 points Texas lost to #11 Kansas 86-92 = +9 points Wake Forest lost to #13 North Carolina 69-73 = +9 points Connecticut lost to #8 Wichita State 62-72 = +8 points Middle Tennessee State lost to #15 U of Miami 81-84 = +8 points DePaul lost to #1 Villanova 85-103 = +7 points Seton Hall beat #25 Creighton 90-84 = +7 points Georgia lost to #16 Kentucky 61-66 = +5 points Arizona State lost to #17 Arizona 78-84 = +3 points St. John’s lost to #23 Seton Hall 70-75 = -2 points Creighton lost to #23 Seton Hall 84-90 = -3 points Pittsburgh lost to #15 U of Miami 53-67 = -3 points Providence lost to #25 Creighton 64-83 = -18 points Louisville lost to #16 Kentucky 61-90 = -19 points Baylor lost to #22 Texas Tech 53-77 = -20 points Lipscomb lost to #14 Purdue 66-98 = -20 points Cleveland State lost to #2 Michigan State 61-111 = -26 points Pacific lost to #20 Gonzaga 48-81 = -27 points Memphis lost to #21 Cincinnati 48-82 = -29 points Savannah State lost to #2 Michigan State 52-108 = -32 points Santa Clara lost to #20 Gonzaga 52-101 = -43 points Comment: From +43 to -43. Oklahoma’s Trey Young is the phenomenon of the year so far but Alabama has an outstanding freshman guard themselves in Colin Sexton, who is averaging 20.1ppg and has had a 40 point game. But they are so good, that when Sexton had a bad game (3 for 12) and still beat the #5 team in the nation by 22 points. Coach Boeheim has said he’s impressed with that Texas Tech team, which wiped out #18 Baylor by 24 points. They are 12-1 and are second with +84 points. DePaul had a good week, (+22), even though they didn’t win any games. Remember when they were really good? Maybe they will be again. Louisville looked really bad vs. Kentucky, who had not been blowing teams out. Note that Boston College has +46 points. Top 25 Michigan State +92 points Texas Tech +84 points Texas A&M +70 points Purdue +67 points Arizona State +64 points Duke +62 points Southern Methodist +54 points Florida State +53 points Florida +52 points Xavier +51 points Alabama +50 points Oklahoma +49 points Boston College +46 points Gonzaga +37 points Tennessee +37 points Arkansas +35 points Arizona +34 points Texas +31 points North Carolina State +30 points Villanova +30 points Wichita State +29 points Nebraska +28 points Seton Hall +28 points Butler +27 points Western Kentucky +25 points Wofford +25 points Syracuse got +8 points from the loss to Kansas The worst team so far is Savannah State with -151 points. (But they made plenty of money playing those teams)
