Airon Servais and Josh Black Press Conference | Oct 20

Josh Black on first. Is asked about being a huge underdog against Clemson. "Seeing everything on social media, you just kind of have to put it on the back of your head."

Black on SU's run defense issues. "Other teams are finding the gaps that are open. A lot of times we're slanting left or slanting right. It's a game of chess. If they make the right call to our wrong call, it could be a home run."

Black said defenders finishing plays is a huge emphasis. Those TD runs should be stopped closer to 6 yards. Guys need to be ready to rally to the ball against Travis Etienne.

Black said some younger players on defense came here with the expectation of winning. "Keeping the younger guys level-headed" has been an emphasis for Black and the veterans. Black is leaning on his experience and "trying to keep guys positive."

Black said he wants to keep the meeting Dino Babers had with seniors in-house, but it starts with the little things. Veterans need to play like veterans and lead the way from a work ethic perspective behind the scenes.

Black said recovery is really important at this stage in the season given how many players are already sidelined due to injury. "We can't afford anyone to go down."

Black said it's on the senior class to keep the team focused. Lays down a great quote: "We've got a lot of dip on our chip for sure."

Black on LB Mikel Jones: "He's always around the facility. ... He's one of those guys who understands the importance of the little things." Gets to practice to stretch early, is often sitting in his locker watching film.

More Black on Jones: "He's irreplaceable. Great young man and he's going to be a hell of a football player.

Rex Culpepper has been scratched from the presser due to a conflict, per SU Athletics. So it'll just be Black and Airon Servais tonight.

Servais on facing Clemson: "It's important that we bring our A-game this week and that we're all locked in in practice to make sure we do what we want to do this weekend."

Servais on starting 42 straight games: "You definitely get banged up throughout your career. A lot of times, it's just something you've got to play though. ... Your body is the temple. Your body is the moneymaker." Said he doesn't want to let teammates down.

Servais said he and Matthew Bergeron think they're better at their current positions, having flipped LT/RT two weeks ago. Servais is now on the right and Bergeron on the left.

Servais said members of the senior class has discussed the option of returning for next year. They've got more pressing issues, though: trying to guide the team forward after its 1-4 start. "We're really focused on right now."

Servais said the structure of practice hasn't changed this year despite all the unavailable players. He's just tried to stay in the training room to handle minor issues as they arise and help prevent future injuries.

Servais on freshman RB Sean Tucker: "I think Tucker's just a really naturally talented guy." Said he's still got some little things to learn (likely protections), but he's impressed Servais with his ability thus far.

Servais on QB Rex Culpepper getting to start after beating cancer two years ago: "He's definitely been to hell and back. He's done some incredible things. ... He's a hell of a guy. He's a warrior. He's got a warrior spirit. And it's really fun to see him do what he does."
