Alabama-LSU draws lowest-ever BCS title rating

13 something. that right there is funny.

I thought I heard 11.8.

That will speed up the BCS changes conversations. They tied a World Series game.

Best joke I heard on twitter today. The LSU team is still stuck in New Orleans. Someone painted a 50 yard line in front of the bus.

The overnight rating is not the official, final rating. It's a proxy until the final rating comes in.

Stay. Tuned.

;)

Was this the first time it was on ESPN? And why put it on ESPN and not ABC?

But it was the game of the century! Part deux!

I'm glad America stayed away. Hopefully it leads to changes.

Last year was first time on ESPN, and it ended up being the most-viewed cable TV program ever.

If it would do better rating on ABC why put it on ESPN? And why in the hell have the Bachelor on the same night and hurt your own ratings? That to me seems like a huge mistake by ABC/ESPN.

There were two BCS champ games that drew lower ratings.

BTW, I'm not trying to be a stooge for the BCS, I get that most of you hate it. I just feel compelled to present the correct facts.

Even if this was the last game of a full-blown playoff, the factors of two teams from the same conference, from the same, lowly populated region, and a relatively non-competitive game, was going to lead to soft ratings.

No different than when the Yankees played the Mets in the World Series.

What do you think were the most important factors driving those low ratings? I can think of many possibilities: game occurs too late (NFL playoffs have started etc.), game is a rematch, game is two teams from one conference, both teams are similar, game likely to be defensive struggle, game features no star names on offense (like Andrew Luck).

I would guess that the two biggest were the lateness of the game (January 9???) and the fact that both teams were from the same conference. The latter strikes me as funny because the SEC is obviously trying to rig the system so it can get all the BCS bids, but that cuts against what the networks would want to do, since it drives down viewership and thus ad revenue.

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good argument, you are ruining everyone's day here. DAMN THE BCS!!!! College football is a farce!! WE NEED CHANGE!!! How do we know alabama was the best team!!! Playoff!!!! I remember in 1967 when college football was played the right way!!! Bring back leather helmets!!! I want defense, no I want offense, where is the pageantry!! Oregon no Alabama, Crooks!! SEC sucks, boring style, no defense!!! More offense!!! More defense!!

How about that 4.5 for WVU v. Clemson. I thought WV had fans all over the country per the geniuses over on their fan board. That number MUST be some kind of mistake!

Well the BCS better start telling people that, because the spin right now is that the ratings sucked. Couple that with the game being less than entertaining and a rematch, not sure how many people are going to have faith in the BCS to get this matchup right in the future.

I don't think changes will make much of a difference.

The fact is that once a college team's season is over - and once the traditional bowls are played - most college football fans move on.

I know that's how I feel. I am much more interested in the Rose, Cotton, Orange and Fiesta Bowls than the "BCS Championship" game.

Are you OK today? This is about your 3rd post I have seen over the top exaggerated, all on different subjects.

Because people (average non football fan tuning in) want to see an exciting game. Not a FG defense fest. They dont care that this was one of he best defensive performances. They want to see touchdown passes and long TD runs and back and forth action.

Playing the game a month and a half after the season ends also doesnt help.

I bet the ratings would be higher if they didn't wait so long. Of course if they do a +1 after all the major bowls it would have to be no sooner than Jan 8 anyway. But I think those other bowls are part of the problem though. Put them all back on NYD as you have suggested then there isn't that saturation of a new, and generally meaningless, college bowl game every single night.

If it weren't 2 SEC teams in a rematch, and they played the game on Thursday Jan 5, before the NFL playoffs start up, I think the ratings would do better. I say that as no expert of the TV industry of course.

I read an article about the overnight ratings of the 1 pm NYD bowls. Overnight cumulative rating for all 3 went from 12ish last year to 9ish this year? Scooch is that article anywhere near correct? Found in Jacksonville.com or something like that, as they were proud that the Gator was the only one that actually went up from last year. Article went onto say how poor the attendance #s were at all 3. Lowest Gator Bowl attendance in years, Capital One didn't sell out (yet Champs did, has to be a first) and Outback was less than 50k.

Yeah, well I don't work for the BCS. They can do what they want.

I didn't see that, so I'm not really sure. Media reporters doing their own ratings calculations tends to end badly. ;)

In my opinion I think A) nobody cared to see a rematch, B) everybody knew it would be low scoring yawn fest and C) it’s late at night for the east coast. I also think it loses its luster by having so much time in between the season and the game. January 9th is ridiculous.

Personally, I think more people would tune in to see a rematch if both teams earned the right to play each other again. If Bama beat Oregon or Stanford and LSU took down Okie State to set up the rematch that would be far more compelling.

There was a lengthy thread on the board yesterday about not caring to watch it.
