Mellen Was a beast again I haven't seen a defender that is this poised and skilled as a freshman for a long time! There I said it!

I thought Firman and Fusco played very well tonight without being noticed.

Shewell could be a great one and it seems our attack is set for a few years to come!

Mellen held Connor Fields to 0 & 2 yesterday. First time he's ever been held scoreless.

This is all you need to know to gauge how good Mellen is. Desko decided to put a Freshmen player in his second game on Albany's best player despite having a 5th year senior captain 1st team All-American defender in Brandon Mullins as a choice, wow.

Mellen is fantastic, he was all over the place yesterday, and was the only d-man I saw pick up a GB in traffic. Kid is a star, little hesitant to think he won't take some licks this year though, despite how he played yesterday. Fields is very good, but this was also his first game as the primary feeder without Lyle.

His ability to pick up groundballs reminds me of Joel White, its that good. Would love to have him on the faceoff wings but dont' want to burn him out. I thought Firman had a couple nice groundballs as well but I get your point a lot of the other d guys aren't great at it. Quiet game for Mullins, got beat once but that was about it.

Agreed. He is always around the ball. At least thus far. Very similar to White. A little Abbot like as well, although different position.

Other things I liked. Dejoe played well. If he is short sticked he will score pts. Reminds me a bit of Ianzito his senior year. Light came on and he was a major cog. Agree with WoodyUK about Firman and Fusco. Both played well. Dylan needs to get the ball more, and Evans needs to get the ball less. Perhaps if and when NP returns we can take some of the feeder role away from Evans. He really had some bad moments. Really like the play of CP too at the X. Hope Desko gets him run every game. Preferably 5-7 draws. Need to make sure we are good there and give everyone experience. Especially if there is little drop off. Was concerned a bit about Hill early, but he made some stops at the end which I liked. Wait and see mode for me there. Final thought is Lane is a beast, but not that fluid. He is a little mechanical and needs to be more comfortable out there. Also want to see him post up a bit and use that size. He's no burner, but can be effective in many ways.

Agree on a lot of your points, Ianzito played D middie I believe his senior year and was excellent, to bad the staff hadn't tried him there earlier. I was surprised how well Lane has looked so far, I didn't see him transitioning well to middie this early. I just hope the fanbase keeps its expectations in check as teams start to actually game plan for him now. I thought McDermott quietly did a nice job yesterday, pretty sure he was on Oakes who did absolutely nothing and who is going to really struggle without Lyle Thompson.

Key moving forward is going to be how well the midfield plays. They need to get Barber by UVA or I think some cracks will start to show. I worry about the long term depth there as both Simmons and Westin continue to be underwhelming at best. I wonder if Desko will try and run some of the redshirt frosh like Ford and others on the second line to see who will break out.

Very happy with what I am seeing from Salcido so far, very much in control, making smart decisions and burying wide open looks. Need him to keep it up.

Ah, my bad. I'm turned around a bit. Though Steve was a D-middie until senior year and moved to Offense. Remember him scoring some goals that year that were big. Think I must be thinking of someone else. Two others that fit a similar description were Bobby Eilers and Brendan Loftus. Both had big senior years, after up and down careers.

New to the board...show some mercy on the new guy.
Another good showing by Cuse. It's February but nonetheless, Cuse looks pretty good, there's a lot to like there. Am really liking what I'm seeing from Lane. Like most others, the first time I saw him, I said OMG the day he decides to take the game over, it's going to be incredible and I'm beginning to see that. Showed some signs in the Siena game and certainly a whole lot more in the Albany game. If this kid develops the right mentality, look out. Myles Jones aint got nuthin' on him.
Gotta be pretty happy with the O...lotta fire power there. (Evans has to go back to middie...plays way too soft and that's not gonna change) D lookin' mighty good too...Mellen, a freshman, sure doesn't play that way. Kid's got great talent and instincts.
Army up next, looking forward to it.

Agree completely on Salcido. He looks quick and confident. That midfield line can be extremely dangerous if he continues to contribute. There were times when he pulled out instead of running in out of control. Great poise.
Jeremy, I respect how you are acknowledging your previous reservations on Lane. :) While I agree it will be a challenge for him moving forward with the adjustments by future defenses... it is nice to see his progression thus far. This is the fun of college sports guys can grow up right in front of us. I may be one of those lunatics who need to keep my expectations in check but it is nice to see such improvement.

I really would have liked to have seen Jordan Evans in high school before his injuries. He started off the game with a nice goal and then was kind of disappointing. He seems like a great kid and I respect that he took on #22. Feel for him and want him to improve. The Marist game last year was amazing. I thought he was just out of position at midfield and would step up this season. Still early but man.

One random point, after watching the post game interview it feels like these guys like playing with each other and there is nice chemistry so far. I have no evidence to back it up but I got a kick out of the reaction by DeJoe, Lane when Ben Williams talked about missing the net on his fast break off the face off. It was a brief moment but the way they were kind of ribbing him felt genuine. Winning likely helps.

On defense it felt like Albany scored a few goals on the same exact play at the start of the game. It was nice to see our coaching staff adjust in the second half.

Mellon is a defenders defender. I enjoy his methodical approach and stick skills. When I played it always bothered me that others on the team or fans in the stands just thought we (defensemen) were a bunch of lumber jacks back there swinging 7 feet with reckless abandon. It is very nice to see a guy control the stick by using the length to create ground ball positioning for himself on loose situations. He also throws timing and precise checks. Just an artist so far. What an addition to the team.

Hill looked a bit shaky but some of those shots were just point blank and tough to stop. He did make some nice saves in the second half as jr4750 pointed out. He feels like the kind of goalie who needs to be active in the game to get going not sure if that is a good or bad thing. Wardwell was solid but I never felt like he could take over a game. Maybe Hill has that ability. Some of the stops he made were quite nice. In our section we were wondering who the back up goalie is? I leave it to the experts here to help in that regard? Anyone know?
