We have a roster that isn’t great nor bad but it’s lacking a few NFL talent playmakers. It’s bottom of the P5 in playmakers.

Dino’s scheme has helped.
The offense has sucked for 2 quarters pretty much every game but the opener and we have scored 23, 41, 26, 25, 27 points.

So it’s a lot better than the previous staff and the fact the coaches cleaned up the defense is huge.

This Robinson kid at DE could become a stud. He injured the Pitt QB.

We need a few playmakers and Dino will get this done. Especially with our schedule being softer the next 2 years.

We’re consistently inconsistent on O. That’s the OL, mostly. Luckily, the scheme and a lights out 3rd down D gets us multiple chances.

Whenever and however we fix that (likely time + little recruiting) we’ll see a jump in scoring.

Next year every returning player will be better.

And the OL will have a full season and off season working together. I think we see vast improvement because of it.

How many teams can match Dungey, Ish, Irv, Pierce as a passing combo? The problem is at RB.

We need more on D though. Outside of Bennett we are lacking or young.

Agree. Watching the game yesterday, I was thinking the same thing. Get a dynamic back in there and this team is impossible to stop. I've been worried about next year but with Pierce, Phillips, and Butler, Dungey will have plenty of targets.

Agreed, just look how much more fluid the offense started running in the second half when we were at least getting a few yards from Strickland. Running makes all the difference, especially in this offense.

Seeing Butler make some plays is Huge.. just forcing the D to honor the backside WR. this is where the coaches though Custis would shine.. Nice part of him starting to make plays is that we could go Ish/Custis/Butler/phillips/Pierce or Johnson/Riley . 3 bigs and some quicks in that grouping..

Just don't get too dejected when we either don't run on Fri or run for like 0.05 yards per carry from our RB.

I personally don't want to see a lot of Dungey running either, but we know...

Philips is a senior. Enjoy him while we can. I think you'll see Neal & Nykiem step into his role next year.

If we're being honest, the majority of the P5 can match our QB/WR/TE combo. Don't get me wrong, they're talented but their #s, especially Ish & Erv, are certainly inflated by our system. I agree with your 2nd point. If our running game, OL & RBs, was at even the P5 average, we'd likely be at least 5-1.

True. I'd throw in reps in practice + good WR coaching as a major difference too. You'll get every opportunity to max out your talent here.

Disagree. Other teams have more depth but few have their combo of #1s.

Love Alton Robinson - No. 94.

What a great get.

This has been a huge IMO. It's been a really long time since we've consistently been able to do this. Even with Shafer's D, sometimes the pressure worked and we got a big stop but there were just as many instances it didn't work and the D was on the field for an extended period of time.

It was getting to the point where every time I heard the 3rd down, Undertaker bell, it was code to the other teams offense that they were about to get a 3rd down. Not be stopped. I started to hate hearing that bell.

I never quite understood this. We've been saying it since Grob was booted. Our players get better and the other teams players get better, it's not like we improve and everyone stays at the same spot so we are inherently better the following year.

We need to keep improving the baseline of the recruits coming in and naturally, like other good teams, the team will be better overall. I think we are on the right track.

 - Don't watch a ton of CFB other than SU?

Just to simplify it do you really think there are 5 ACC teams with the combo of those positions that are better? Sure there are better Individuals at each position, But the combo of quality QB, outside #1 WR, inside #1 WR, and TE is easily matched.

If you think it is so easy to dispel provide the examples.

On the playmaker comment, I wish more of our fan base appreciated how good Steve Ishmael has been this year. Imo, he's a lot better than most seem to recognize and will not be easily replaced.
I love Ish but he is a possession receiver. Those are valuable as hell but my point was a guy who can turn a 5 yard slant into a big gain.

Or a guy who can run a 9 route on the post.

Ish is going to be a first team all conference player but I meant NFL talent playmakers.

If we can keep getting Ish’s in recruiting the system will work.

We need playmakers and Ish’s.

The problem is the other teams have better OL and RBs.

If this team had Gus Edwards the offense we have would be awesome.

Dino’s system on offense works. Our problem is top end talent. Dino’s system is working with 3 star talent in Ishmael and Philips. If he starts getting 4 star WRs a la Baylor we could have Terrence Williams, Corey Coleman, Kendall Wright, Josh Gordon level playmakers in recruiting.

He has definitely taken his game up a level.

I'm not sure how good he is, really though.

I don't think he's as good as Kevin Johnson was, for example.

Understood. But if a unit has a lot of underclassmen (like our DEs, or the OL), the improvement comes as the group matures. Or if a unit has seniors (Ishmael & Phillips; or our LB group), you start over. Our defense is an example -- way too young in 2015, medium young in 2016, very experienced core group in 2017, augmented by grad transfers & jucos.
