I happen to think Allen would be a good QB by the end of the year. He has some tools, though he looks far less agile and accurate than advertised. The question is how many more games, if any, does Allen win you this year, that makes it worth it to start from scratch with a new QB again next year. I also think it is much easier to sell Hunt's potential and what he'll be like when future recruits get here than struggling with a fith year senior.

I think Hunt is more unorthodox, and Allen is more deliberate. What they means in terms of wins and losses? I have no idea. But if we have to let Hunt scramble around a little bit in order to create some time for guys like Estime and Broyld to find and opening, off the script, I am okay with that. We were just so damned spoiled with Nassib, who knew the offense backwards and forwards.

He's the bridge to Wilson or Kimble.

That was something I wondered about as well...is it they would rather start Allen and not Hunt because if Hunt wins the job he may hold it for 2 more years when they feel Kimble or Wilson are thee guy?

I don't know if he is being coached this way or what, but Allen clearly has no clue how to run the read option. You've got the NW ends crashing inside all game - the edges are wide open - pull the ball out and run Drew! We are handing the ball off right into the strength of their defense. And while I'm on Allen please move around in the pocket a little - if your going to throw sidearm at head level at least create some better, open angles so you don't get picked or balls batted down all the time.

I vote for giving Allen and Hunt equal time in the Wagner and Tulane games...whoever is more productive starts against Clemson. I realize it was garbage time, but Hunt is Waaay more athletic than Allen, throws overhand and gives the defense something to be concerned with...a QB that can run!

As for McDonald, how about we go with the KISS strategy. We've got good experienced players on offense that don't seem to know what to do. Get a handful of plays and do them well...stop trying to outsmart the defense - establish an identity and make the defense defend it. When players are thinking too much they don't play as fast. IMO, Hickey, Macky, Trudo, Smith and PTG are not playing to their potential - that's is on the coaches.

Whew, O.K. got that off my chest...feel better now.

I have to admit I don't know if I want to go through Allens growing pains to learn this offense. I see talent there and I understand why the coaches picked him but I just don't know if he can fix this stare down thing, ear toss and learning the offense at the same time plus the lack of mobility...jesus he looked like herman munster running. Ran tough but wow, slower than I've heard...especially the quick twitch stuff.

I believe we are starting to see some of the reason, besides the fact he had to compete against tow future NFL QBs, that Allen never saw much playing time at OU. He has good machines and throwing motion. He runs into problems with his accuracy, not looking off a WR his INT we he was throwing to West and the LB picked it off was a text book case of locking his eyes and the whole stadium knowing where he is throwing the ball, and he doesn't have much game speed. The young man may look great in practice, but it's not translating on to the field. If he can fix the INT's and not locking onto receivers he might turn out to be a damn good QB. I'm all for giving him and Hunt playing time next two games.

I know we only have a two game sample size, but Allen looks like a true freshman QB out there and not a 5th year QB. I know it's his first in-game action and the speed is so much greater than in practice, but he just looks lost out there. A big part of the reason so many passes are getting tipped/batted down is because he just locks on to one target and stares him down the whole time. There's no progressing through his reads and his mind is made up where the ball is going before he snaps it (take, for example, that deep pass to West down the middle that was double-covered - he just hiked the ball, took his drop, and chucked it). Easy for the defense to react to that.

Now I know Hunt has an even smaller sample size than Allen, but that pass 20 yards downfield he had was a thing of beauty. Held the safeties at bay by looking them off, and delivered a strike. Also ran the read-option much more effectively. Not sure if starting Hunt over Allen means more wins for this team, but I'd be willing to give it a shot now.

Allen looks slower than the game around him. Hunt -- in limited action -- looked faster than the game around him.

I say go with Hunt to give the Cuse a better chance with his running ability.
