1963 SU grad here. Yeah, I remember the good old days at Archbold Stadium and the #44 history. I have hated on Notre Dame since that field goal with zero time left that cost us an Orange Bowl bid. How can I forget .G. Skibbie the field judge, and Father Hessberg who wouldn't return the victory to us, even though the NCAA rules committee decided we had actually won. Can I let go of that hate? Yeah, it is slowly subsiding. However, this is a basketball post, so i had best get on track.

I just watched a Notre Dame BBall team knock off The Tarheels and Dook on CONSECUTIVE nights. I kinda took a liking to Brey and his team...the new ACC kids on the block. So, I think that maybe tomorrow I'll go out, dig a hole, and bury the hatchet.. By the way, I have read this board since inception and find it informative and quite funny at times. You good posters know who you are. Thank you, keep it up. Finally to my point....

In the ACC playoffs I watched this senior guard Connaughton run like a rabbit around NC and Dook , while playing great D and O for the entire game. Rarely ever took breaks. He was able to hit his shots when his team.needed them. A money performer, if you will. Did Brey need to lower his minutes so that his shots would fall? No. Now, my point. Why are some posters claiming that Cooney needs rest in order to finally be a productive shooter? At 20-21 I could run and ball all day. I played in many a tough singles match going the full five sets. With plenty of time outs, phooey on the "needs more rest" baloney, especially playing zone. I think Joseph and Cooney are the slowest tandem we have ever had at the guard positions. Opposing guards nave shred our perimeter all year. Not hating on Cooney, as he is doing his best, but both he and Joseph have been caught from behind on too many run outs this year. They are just both slow and not really good shooters. I think we improve perimeter defense once Cooney moves on. Jury still out on Joseph.

Have fun with this, guys. Take Care, Scott (retired in Roatan)

I agree with you. It's a treat that a former Big East team comes into Carolina and wins the title in it's first season. Virginia I can live with, but I've disliked UNC and Duke since a young age.

No you're not wrong Walter you're just an idiot

Wait, both of our avatars are named Walter. Is that the OP's real name as well? That'd be a bit freaky. Or did the Dude say that?

1963... That must make you around 73-74? And you're retired in Roatan? Honduras? Nice post, would like to hear more about That Island you are on. What are some of the positives and negatives of living there? Do you speak Spanish or do you live in an American retirement community like they have in so many of the Central American countries like Belize? How expensive is life there.. Thinking about it myself.

I love Placencia, Belize but it is undergoing the Americanization...fortunately the town itself still has,it's charm (as of 3 years ago). It would bore partygoers or Bermuda shorted tourists but it's the right side of the beaten path for me.

Well you are wrong on the not needing rest part.

You are correct on the Cooney not being very good part.

My uncle played in that 1961 game against Notre Dame. A screw job indeed. And another screw job when Don McPherson should have won the Heisman Trophy over Tim Brown. You won't find me rooting for Notre Dame even though my grandmother's maiden name was Slattery! I will be celebrating St Patrick's Day though tomorrow :)

Hi Guys,

No, I never met CTO. However, I worked PT delivering pizzas for Cosmo's when Dimo, George, John and Leon were there. Maybe I delivered to her? LOL. Fun times and great for meeting chix. Never got back to the dorm until 2-3 AM.

So how come Connaughton can run around like a rabbit for two consecutive nights vs. top ten competition, with defender after defender thrown at him and make most of his shots, yet Cooney needs "more rest" when he plays twice a week? I don't see it. Plenty of time outs. How different is Connaughton?

When I moved to Roatan seven years ago there was one cruise ship coming to port a month. Now there are five per week. The island has lousy infrastructure to start. With no new roads, the taxi's have grown 100-fold and traffic is getting congested. Pricing is now geared toward the tourist, not the retiree here. Getting so that the dream has eroded. If you like to dive, snorkel and fish, this is a great island. Tuna are only 300' off the reef. Same for wahoo, who come in for the tuna. Dorado are out a bit more. Sails and Marlin within a mile from shore. So I brought down a 16' CC Carolina Skiff and put a Yamaha Enduro 40 on it. Caught all the tuna I wanted. 40 dinners in the freezer at one point. All on light tackle. Got one 30 lb. wahoo on a /W bass outfit I will never forget. 35 min. of thrills. Man, can they run! 14 meals!

Skin cancer made me sell the boat last year, so I bought a Yamaha Super Tenere 1200 to tour Central America on the mainland. My wife and I hit all the lovely B&B's along the way. The Honduras mountain region is exceptionally attractive. We travel only in the daytime. Then I bought a Yamaha XT250 dual sport for use on the island, So i can ride every day and go on 1-2 week trips with my wife at will. When a place gets "found", the handwriting is on the wall. Game over, sad to say. I din't think there are any more moves left in me. We were in Montana on Flathead Lake before coming here. With a 6' dish, we get all the ACC games on DiSH. Just don't tell them that I'm not in the USA anymore. Thanks.

You guys on this board keep me going. I read all the new threads every night when I go to bed, looking over a 180 degree view of the waves hitting the reef and feeling the fresh trades coming in through the window. Could be worse, eh? My time at SU was the best in my life, save for sailing the Caribbean with my wife for six years. Keep up the great posts, guys. Thanks!

I understand your point about Connaughton, but I think it's a liiiiittle different here, mainly because Connaughton has so many other offensive options to take some of the pressure off. I don't really buy into the "he's so tired" thing as much as I used to, but you have to take into account that Cooney basically has no other perimeter shooters to take the pressure off like Connaughton does. You can devote a guy strictly to him all game because you know there are so few other offensive options, the way our team was constructed this year. With Notre Dame, multiple people could hurt you every time they take the floor.

And the other thing: Connaughton is just a better shooter than Cooney. That's the big thing here. Being a better shooter, and having more help so that the defense can't key in on you as much...that's going to lead to a much better shooting percentage. I'd also add that Notre Dame's half court offense is just sooo much better than ours, because they actually run one. Connaughton gets far superior shots than Cooney most of the time (granted, Cooney had a lot of good looks this year he just plain missed), and Cooney has a tendency to take off balance shots, often from deeper than he needs to. That's not a recipe for success.

Wrong about burying the hatchet. I enjoyed seeing Tobacco Road go down on back-to-back nights, but I did not enjoy N.D. winning. They never made it to the final game in the Big East and I would have been happy if they had never won the ACC tournament. Brey seems like a nice enough guy, but he is at N.D.

Connaughton and Cooney? You are right.
