There are very few of them out there.

I would not put many of the marquis names in that category - Chip Kelly is an example for me - a guy who I'm sure is very good but who has benefited from gobs of investment in the program.

But there is at least one great, great coach in college football and his name is Bill Snyder.

He did it again last night - K-Sate beats OU at OU.

Would you consider Jim Tressel to be a great coach or just benefited from a great situation?

How about the job Jerry Kill is doing. Coming off a cancer diagnosis, seizures on the field and a 3-9 season he's 4-0!

There's more than one way to be a great college football coach, since you have control over all aspects of your program.

Kelly's a great coach because he's taken those ridiculous investments and implemented a unique, identifiable brand of football that takes complete advantage of those facilities. A good coach would go 8-4.

Agree that Snyder's a great coach.

I wish we had one.

Snyder is one of the really great college coaches. Like him a lot.

Snyder is one of the great football coaches on any level! They should rename the stadium after him and build a statue to him outside that place. He took a nothing program and built it into something special.

The stadium is named after him.

You have to give a lot of credit to Frank Beamer. In the early days, they built up their program on cream puffs, but they have dominated the ACC since they made the move. Sure, their BCS record isn't that great, but how many times have they played in BCS games now? He's done a great job.

SU setn after Kelly, but as soon as we were about to interview him, they moved him into the head coaching position.

Oregon doesn't even need to recruit. How many times do you see players list them before they're even really being recruited. I'm a tradition guy, but have to admit that the flashy uniforms work. And yes, I think even more than the crazy facilities.

Don't diminish their success. While their facilities are insane, there are 15-20 schools that can offer a very similar experience on that front. What they've done over the past 15 years or so is remarkable. And it's not like the state of Oregon is some largely populated, recruiting hotbed. Their population is about the same as Connecticut.

Great, great point. New Hampshire really put an insane amount of investment into their football program and facilities, and when you combine that with the recruiting hotbed that is the Granite state it's fair to say that Chip Kelly isn't great, he just had the skill and smarts to make the best out of a good situation.

Really convenient argument you've got there, OPA. Snyder's one of those guys you like to point to as one that started slow and that was given time to succeed, so it makes sense you'd call him a great coach, because hey, if we pull the plug on Marrone you can make the case that we gave up on a great coach too early. Calling Kelly a great coach, a guy that succeeded immediately as soon as he was put in charge, would mean you would have to acknowledge that maybe, just maybe his innovation and unique system actually matter. Which is impossible, since you've learned me many times that systems don't matter, talent does.

Come on, man.

From what I have heard Snyder is pre-marriage Coach P. Lives at the office, does nothing but football, etc. One coach not mentioned is Bob Stoops. Seems to run a good program at OU. Took over a powerhouse that had fallen on hard times and has been consistently good. Also I like Les Miles. Definitely do not like the Urban Meyers, Nick Sabans, and Bobby Petrinos of the world. Each of those 3 is a different degree of mercenary.
