How do we get so many turnovers last year when we were not as good a team, and this year almost none? DL is strong getting pressure. LBs are more seasoned. Is it just a difference in safeties? I’m puzzled.

I'm going to take a guess and say that aside from luck, which is a factor in my opinion, it may be a result of good coaching. What I mean is that this team seems much more focused on tackling and getting the players to the ground rather than trying to strip the ball. Missing our premier safety (Cisco) and for that matter, our top safeties that returned from last year, has probably affected the interceptions a bit. That's as much on the opposing QBs as on our secondary, too.

Turnovers are more luck than skill.

True. But - forcing more (even if you don’t always get the bounces) IS something of a skill.

Also - it really seems like our DB’s rarely turn to look for the ball.
IF they did on some of these deep routes, there have been like 1-2 fairly routine INT’s there for the taking.
Or at least they woulda been PBU’s.

I can’t remember if it was Connelly or another analytic guy who ran article about this. Our turnover numbers last year were so high that a ton of it had to be attributed to luck. We were a stastistical anomaly for those 11 games.

I think quite a few of our takeaways last year were due to the opposing offenses overconfidence. After getting up 2 or more scores their QB's would play loose and throw passes (or extend plays) that they probably wouldn't have if it was a closer game or a game they thought they might lose.

We also lost our three best secondary players to the NFL...

I'm surprised our DL hasn't got more strip sacks, I feel like we're so close every time.

We’re getting better at sustaining offensive drives. Defense is on the field less.

Agree. I feel on a couple of tds Duce gave up this season he could have broken up the pass or get an int. In the touchdown last night never looked like he looked back. He’s is a great cb and only will get better but has been beaten a couple of times by not turning his head.

you mean like dropping an INT or not recovering a punt fumble vs Clemson.. sometimes you cause TOs and sometimes you are gifted them. You still have to catch the INTs and we have dropped 3-5 of those.

Purdue had 2 all year and got 4 vs a team like Iowa that got to #2 because they were so far ahead in turnover margin.. Its just happens sometimes..
