If you don;t think that beating a preseason #2 (and in some publications #1) USC would have gotten us credibility, then I don't know what to to tell you. In the 09-10 basketball season we basically hung our hat on that NYC win against then #4 UNC. The same UNC team that played in the NIT.  It doesn't matter that UNC ended up sucking, the only thing that matters as far as the polls is where they were when you beat them. 
 
And this year the BE had three teams ranked at various points through the year. In this fantasy, the BE would have had four ranked teams though only one, Syracuse standing in for 2007 WVU, would have beaten a Top 5 out of conference power program. Despite our struggles recently, we're in the club that UConn and Rutgers (in spite of the B1G membership) and Louisville never will be. For better or worse, college football is the only sport where what you did 50 years ago matters as much as what you do today, and 50 years ago we had a guy winning a Heisman that had a movie made about his life.
