I still think this is a job Shafer can handle. There's been plenty of examples of coaches having sustained success after multiple losing seasons. (Mac, Cutcliffe) I think Syracuse fans need to look in the mirror and realize what kind of program we are in the current state. This wouldn't be an easy fix for a coach no matter who it is. The goal should be to be the best football conference in the North East, and I think if we change coaches again it is effectively starting over. We had a facilities bump with the IPF, and we should get another with a new stadium/dome renovation in the near future. I see a lot of posters are losing their minds, wanting to go after good recruiters who haven't won at schools with better recruiting classes than what we get now. If they couldn't win with supposedly more talent than we have, how are they going to win here? I think we need to look at Duke as a model. I know we have more history here for football, but as a school they are most like us in this conference. (Small/Private) Cutcliffe was 9-31 his first five years in the ACC at Duke. I know we have a had a few winning seasons here and there, but we basically haven't been relevant since Freeney went to the NFL. This has to be one of the 5 most difficult jobs right now in the P5. There's been some clear improvement in the team from what I have seen. I know the W/L results aren't there, but I at least don't go to the dome expecting to leave at the half anymore down 28-3. This was/is going to be a long fix no matter who is coach, and with Syracuse's history you can't guarantee that we will/can hire a coach better than Shafer. I think the bigger issue is we need to focus on having a great staff. That means we must pay Shafers assistants to ensure we have the best position coaches possible to help him. This isn't just about Shafer, but the entire staff. If football is a priority, assistants need to be paid to ensure we are getting the best we can get.
