Andy Katz podcast: Boeheim

I can't wait to listen to this tonight. I really hope they asked him about getting in to the NCAA Tournament and the national media outrage.

Change needs to happen to the NBA Draft.

I liked Katz suggestion. Let kids go out of HS but if they don't go out of HS you are ineligible for the draft for 2 years.

Greenberg wants to let kids come back after being drafted if they don't like their spot.

Agents are the biggest problem for these kids leaving school.

They could implement both those rules.

How would it be fair to the NBA team that picked them?
How is it fair to the kids that aren't picked? The team that drafts the player retains their rights, but it is up to the kid whether they want to return to develop further or go to the NBA. I am sure it would be covered during the interview process.

Easy - if you are not drafted - you can come back. If you are, you have to stay out. What good would it be for a player to return if the NBA team retains the rights to them at the draft spot (and presumably the salary) they were picked at in the previous year's draft? There would be no reason whatsoever to return to college.

Orlando is still waiting for Fran Vazquez to come overseas from Spain.

If a player is drafted in the first round of MLB draft and doesn't sign then the team gets a compensatory pick the following year.

Players would play 50% on the court to not get hurt, would be bad for the college game.

There is the MLB system. Lots of players have been drafted, decided not to sign, returned to amateur ball, and get drafted again by someone else. The question is how long does the first team hold the rights.

but they also lose their 1st round pick the following year.

in the MLB if you draft a player anywhere in the top 10 rounds and you dont sign them...you lose your first pick in the next draft. apples to oranges based off the sheer # of players drafted in the MLB and the rounds associated with that.

The point is, there are ways to tweak, or even overhaul, the current NBA system.

The Mlb system makes a lot of sense, if you are good enough like Lebron or Kobe, you can put your name in the draft, if not you have to go to school for two or three years.

MLB is a bad comparison. 1st round draft picks rarely make it to the majors in their first season and those that do rarely make any kind of immediate impact in the MLB. In the NBA, even a mid or late 1st round pick can be impactful right away. Missing out on your pick just to get a compensatory pick a year later in the NBA is not equitable.

A big part of the problem now is that it is all one sided for the NBA. Colleges currently have everything to lose and nothing to gain. Somehow they need to grow a set of walnuts and take on the NBA. I can't see the NBA compromising when it comes to first round selections but maybe they would allow 2nd round picks to go back to school. There are only a select few that have become star players. Most likely whatever win the schools get will be a very small win.

Is that true? I didn't know that. I thought the comp picks were when you sign a free agent away from a team.

I don't understand why they wouldn't want college to have the kids 2-3 years and develop them and then draft them. It's free development. Then they could see what happens with the kid and how they are developing before they invest money in them.

The NBA sets the agenda here , but the NCAA could decide certain things (ie players can profit from their own name and likeness) that would help it make sense for players to stay in school.

Every time Boeheim gets asked about coaching longer I know what he is going to say but the split second before he answers I always think say coach for 5 more years. Come on. It never happens though.

Both type of compensatory picks are awarded.
