Not sure if someone else reported the interesting comment on the Syracuse coaching staff made by Andy. He said Syracuse had dismissed Bernie Fine and that with the promotion of GMAC our coaching staff is now stronger. Most of the players remember Gerry and that the guards would benefit from his youthful enthusiasm. Also that Mike Hopkins replaced Fine as the big man coach. If anyone can remember exactly, word for word what Katz said please feel free to put his quotes in this thread. That is my best recollection.

You pretty much nailed what he said; apparently he didn't think too highly of Fine as a coach

I am pretty sure he used the term 'real coach' as in "with Bernie Fine gone, now Syracuse has another real coach on the staff". Something along those lines. Yes, it was very harsh and I don't think JB is going to like that comment at all.

I suspect JB gave Katz that quote as has been discussed Bernie checked out when Hopkins was named "HC in waiting".

It's easy to say when you have guards like DW throwing down monster dunks and making steals left and right.

...yes he said real coach...was at the game and G-mac actually looks involved and pumped up...talking and giving guidance...unfortunately, BF usually sat at seat with clip board and seemed to do very little...agree that when Hop was given the promotion, BF sort of checked out at least on game days...

Personally I was absolutely offended last night!! Game is on and what pops up ... ESPN's "discussion" of the BF thing. Talk about inappropriate ... but not only 1x but 2x with a screen graphic. And of course Katz couldn't talk about how great the SU played without bringing up BF. I was really pissed!! Why do you have to raise the spectre of BF during the SU game ... our kids and team have nothing to do with it. I am soooooo tired of ESPN continually resurrecting this thing. Are we going to be subjected to this during every ESPN televised game? BS!!

Even worse about raising the issue during games is that some of us have children watching the game. Am I supposed to ban my ten-year-old die-hard fan from games because ESPN might think an out of bounds play is the perfect time for a primer on molestation?

The simple fact is that it is good to have Mike Hopkins work with the bigs -- good experience for him; no reason he can't be good at it. Can't hurt as he (and Autry) are the primary guys on the recruiting trails. On the bench, there is an evident increase in energy as a function of the subtraction.

As for the ESPN mention of the scandal, you have to expect it. At some point it will be old news, but when you are #1 and there is a scandal . . .

I ran into this same problem last night. When you are watching a game and this crap comes up with your 5 and 9 year old watching, it makes watching the game a lot less fun. Fortunately DVRs have pause and fast forward buttons, but I usually only reserve that for the commercials and not the games. Just more evidence of how ESPN is exploiting this issue and really does not care about the bigger picture.

I'd say get used to it. Until it's finally resolved it will be probably be a subject during everyone of our games this year.

As to the issue of the ten year old. I don't think they talked about it in graphic terms, at least not that I noticed. I have a 9 year old and and 11 year old and it actually prompted me to discuss the whole issue of what is right and wrong in terms of what a coach, teacher or other adult might ask them to do. Is it the subject I want to have to address with them during SU games? No. But, apparently its more prevalent and happening "closer to home" than I ever thought.

I was also offended by Katz twice referring to "... the renowned" Gloria Allred. Makes me think Katz and the other so-called ESPN sports journalists are being handed lines to cover by ESPN brass on this.

The transcript - "it has benefiteed the players having Bernie Fine not on the bench anymore and having Gerry McNamara a true coach, he was a grad assistant got bumped up to where he could work with the players, work with the guards, he's not that far removed from playing, he has a great respect with him, I think its added to the intensity and the improved play of this guard play, Mike Hopkins now working with the bigs, its helped them on the court."

The enthusiasm out of GMac is nice. But Waiters had improved over the summer and if any coach gets to horn in on the Waiters improvement it would really have to be Hopkins. GMac can get tied to MCW, which I think is a break for him.

Fab's improvement also came through the summer. And if anyone gets coaching credit for that, it is Bernie. And it looks like a nice going away present.

How convenient of ESPN to think they helped rid the 'Cuse of some dead weight bigs coach's. Isn't it really bad timing for that argument though. Recent results show Bernie was on top of his game. Onaku's improvement rivals anyones on the planet. And now Fab is on the short list for most improved players in the nation. Yes, ESPN let's evaluate all our coaches by the emotion on the sideline and gloss over player improvement.

The Fine story is the bigger story. Bigger than some December game. When talking about SU basketball you can't ignore the elephant in the room. It's a national story that everyone knows about. You have to mention it and talk about it. The fact that it only gets 2 mentions in a game is something we should be grateful for.

It won't be just an ESPN thing either. Come NCAA tourney time and for the CBS regular season game we have, they will cover it. This is a major news item. Aside from the Killing Bin Laden and The Republican's trying to decide on a candidate... you can make a case that the Penn St/Syracuse sex scandals is probably the 3rd biggest news (not sports, NEWS) story of all of 2011! And that will continue heading into 2012.

Yeah, I agree. Not trying to unnecessarily knock Katz, but it's an empty and silly compliment to say that McNamara's an upgrade. Based on our terrific guard play in the past eight games? Maybe, but it'd mean a lot more coming after we'd actually seen some fruits of McNamara's coaching.

Yeah, didn't seem too graphic. Though I do remember the term "gross sexual assault," at which point I said "Of course it's gross, it involves Bernie Fine."

Great game, was there will some people (NC State folk) so had to be on my best behavior. :) DVR'd game and just watched it a short time ago. In my opinion, the timing of that Katz piece about the Fine issue, the suit and confirming from SU's personnel that Boeheim and the University had indeed been served, etc., was totally lame. It was in the midst of that impressive SU 23-0 run...can just imagine what it felt like watching live...talk about buzz kill...Oh Lord

I really, really, REALLY doubt Fine had anything to do with Melo. It had everything to do with who was S&C during the summer. And that is Laz.

Were you one of those ahole, redneck, Yankee trash that were rude and obnoxious ? OK then.;)

Kudos to you for using this situation to be a stronger parent for your children.

I have a 5 year old, so he doesn't quite understand discussions about "his private areas" ...yada, yada. However, this situation has made me a little more aware going forward about exposing him to different situations. I think I'm going to contain him to "group" settings and activities. No activities where he's one on one and alone with an adult that I don't have extensive knowledge of.

As he gets older (when he's capable of understanding more), my wife and I will definitely be educating him on protecting himself from these types of situations.
