Neither defense had a stop after the first drive of the second half. So, what I found interesting about this game is just how many passes Mahomes had to throw to set that record. His completion percentage was 59% and his average yards per attempt was a decent but not great 8.3... To put that into perspective, McCord averaged 8.1 yards per attempt all last season. This wasn't an all world game, in terms of passing efficiency, for Mahomes. What he did have is volume. Texas Tech couldn't run the ball at all. Mahomes was their leading rusher with 85 scrambling yards and the rest of the team only rushed for 35. So, what does this mean for Angeli? He might be called upon to be Mahomes-lite at some point this season. Especially with Willis injured for who knows how long, a porous defense and a decent but not great offensive line, there are sure to be some games this season where we give up a lot of points, can't run the ball, and need him to throw every down. Angeli has weapons around him. A really solid receiver corp (JRS, Cook and Gill), a starting running back whose best talents are pass blocking and catching (Nixon), and a tight end who has shown he can catch and get yards after the catch (Villari). The pass blocking of the line isn't great, but I suspect it will get better. If we let Angeli air it out because we have no other options, and we are otherwise going to lose a shootout... Why couldn't he throw it 80 times, complete 60% of his passes and go for 734? Against Tennessee, under pressure, and in his first game in a de facto road game, Angeli was sacked 5 times, hit a bunch in addition to that, and still completed 57.5% for a 6.9 average. It was a rough game in a few ways... Against UConn, a much worse defense, but closer to what we will see going forward, Angeli was 62.5% and a 7.7 average yards per pass. Still not up to Mahomes or McCord standard. But he seemed to turn the corner in the 4th quarter, where he threw about half his yards and at a much higher percentage. We won't even look at Colgate, but he looked pretty good against them as well. So, my summary is that Angeli is perfectly set up to have HUGE passing numbers this season. Great receivers, no running game and a likelihood of other teams scoring well against our defense all add up to him having a lot of passing attempts. Possibly, if he has a really good game, he could compete for insane records like Mahomes passing record or even Klingler's 11 TD game when they ran up the score in 1990. Or 89 passing attempts set by Connor Halliday of Washington State in 2013. The offense is a tremendous recruiting edge for wide receivers and QBs.
