Unfortunately it looks like Syracuse is out for Barton. it is now between Maryland and Tennessee. Decision coming very soon. Damnit

Stinks, but he wanted to start and get major PT, he wouldn't have had that here.

i don't blame him. he feels he needs to showcase his skills to try and secure his future, i wish him the best. with that said i really think we need to pick someone up. we can't roll the dice like last year. i was holding my breathe every time MCW, and Triche drove down the lane. This year we are even thinner at PG. What if Ennis blows out an ACL in fall camp? Who is our pg Buss? IMO we really need to grab one of these early graduates who is willing to come in and back up the pg. With all these transfers there seems to be a ton of options.

we need shooters, not distributors

Elsewhere a head coach might face substantial criticism for the way 2013-14 shapes up..

No matter how good Tyler Ennis may prove to be, it's rarely a preferred scenario to have to put the ball in the hands of a freshman point guard.
And, heaven forbid, Ennis gets hurt.
Who runs the show?
Another freshman??
Trevor Cooney???
CJ????

You might not think so when Ennis gets in foul trouble next year. Taking a pretty big risk, IMO, having only one true PG. And that risk is further amplified by the fact that the one true PG is a freshman.

I know. You think JB would have drafted better. You can only get the kids who agree to come play for you.

Can we bring back last years thread on guards? It would save a lot of key strokes. Just substitute Ennis for MCW.
How did that work out??

So if Ennis is top 5 in the country in assists as a freshmen we'll be fine. Shouldn 't be too hard

Gibinije can run the point if he needs to.

Ya we have a few guys who could run the point if they need to, but how confident would you feel if we enter the season as Mike Gbinije or Ron Patterson as our point guard?

Sorry but we need another pg more then a shooter. You can't take a chance with a freshman as your only ball handler. There are just way too many things that can go wrong. The season could be in trouble before it even starts.

What if Ennis never makes it on campus academically? The S*&t will really hit the fan then. JB should be run out of town on a rail.

Yes, premature substantial criticism is great. Maybe you should travel over to the Lax board and ask the brainiacs who started the "fire Desko" campaign about how that is working out for them.

Who exactly is this person who preferred a frosh Ennis over MCW? Are you trying to suggest JB prefers this? Please, MCW declared early.

You need to get a hold of a roster sheet. If Ennis gets hurt there are a couple of people you forgot to mention - MG and Buss.

really ? cmon man none of this crap...

Agree per JB Gbinije is the kind of guy that can run point guard for 10 minutes you don't want him to do 20 though.

Also think back to 09-10 scoop did not drive alot that year and played a perimeter entry passing pg role instead of a driving one. He gave us 30 good mpg doing that. I think we could easily see Cooney at PG in a similar role to 09-10 Scoop or freshmen 02-03 Gmac(someone who shot 3's off spoting up instead off off the dribble mostly). Very similar to Melo/Warrick/Duany and Edelin finding Gerry on kickouts in 02-03 (Consistancy not volume).

Dajaun will open up a kickout pass for three while Gbinije and Fairs ability to drive from the perimeter and kick out will leave Cooney as a constant threat. All of that will take pressure off a PG needing to drive. Typically SG's are there to look to score hence the name SG. PG's are there to score on a little lesser scale.

It would be harder for Gbinije to make that transition not to overshoot at point. It could one put more unessasary pressure to discern whether he needs to score alot or not at pg, two put natural frustration in him not being able to score off motion as a PG (another thing JB thinks Gbinije's game is suited to). And three lead to alot of bashing when he doesn't score because his drive will be more readable to double in the highpost and triple as a pg. With Cooney nobody is going to knock him for not driving at point or not being a first/second scoring option at pg.

Neither Gbinije or Cooney are going to beat a double team pressing like MCW, but alot of our pg's have been fine in that situation over the years. Also Tyler Roberson, and Fair move the ball really fast in transition to help out. imo Cooney could play PG for 20 mpg easily for us. Would he turn it over 2-3 times more, maybe but thats not all that much in college ball.

Just saying that almost all the arguments on this thread mirror the ones about our situation with guards last year. Not saying that Ennis will be an MCW clone, but still a good PG for us.

Just anyone? Wouldn't the person have to be better than the current backup for it to make any sense? So the person needs to be better than MG, Buss, and Cooney - and willing to take a backup position. I don't see a ton of options.

And don't forget the cost. Backup playing time given to the one year rental vs developing a program player in our system. And the cost to the team concept in terms of team chemistry and player morale need to be accounted for.

I'm pretty sure he's already here?? wasn't he working out with DC and Rak?

As our starting point guard? I would obviously be very concerned. Mike G or Patterson playing 5-10 minutes at the point, however, I have no worries about that. Hasn't the been reports that Gibinije was running the point with the 2nd team during practices this year?

That's why I am saying we new a pure point guard. I assume Patterson or silent G won't be asked to play the point at any other time in their career so if anything it could help their development by letting them focus on their natural position .
