OF COURSE, any true frosh is going to have ups and downs. And after re-watching the WF game today, it is pretty clear that Dungey struggled until late in the 3rd quarter, when all of the sudden he got into a groove.

But is anybody else as excited about where our program is positioned as I am, given what Eric Dungey seems to be as a playmaker? Imagine how much better he'll be with a year of experience under his belt and 12 extra pounds of good weight?

I think this kid can get us to a bowl this year. Which means, things are going to get exciting!

Honestly, I've conditioned myself to never get too excited any more. Too much crap happens to this program to be hopeful.

But I will say that I haven't seen a freshman QB make the plays he does in a LONG time. And he's confident and just cool... One play summed it up for me Saturday. He scrambled and was chased out of bounds, may have even been tackled, and he pops up, starts to jog back to the huddle and in stride, throws the ball to the ref, a perfect little toss... Behind his back. He's just so calm and nonchalant... Loved it.

Great minds think alike bro! I've been doing "research" on him tonight and swear I didn't see your thread before I posted mine. Though I share the concern in the back of my head that OT4 notes, it's time for the worm to turn up here. LOVED hearing his humility and appreciation I his post game presser and how happy he is to be at Syracuse.

Any recent past optimism I had was based more on hopes and prayers, this time around its more based on facts and reality. This is a good thing my friend...in other words a long winded answer to your question saying YES!

There is a lot to be excited about. Dungey will be surrounded by Brisley for one more year, Ish & Erv for two more years, and Fredericks for 3 more years. The only question would be the OL. As long as they are serviceable SU should be making Bowls. If they are not then ask Hackenberg what happens.

Very excited about the possibilities with this kid at the helm. He definitely seems to have the "it" factor...poised in the pocket, good awareness, pretty careful with the football, and a strong, accurate arm. He will definitely have some bumps and bruises this year, but I think he'll cancel them out with his positive play.

Also I liked how the studio analyst labeled him a "we and they guy" or something to that effect. Praising your teammates and putting the focus on them is a sign of leadership.

He throws long with authority, throws short with touch, likes to run and is good at it, and makes plays work even when things break down. There's a lot of highlight film on him and he's going to make a lot more before he's done. We're fortunate to have him...

Please please please please please do not read too much into what I'm about to say.

But.

Size, intangibles, mobility, arm remind me, at least a little, of Aaron Rodgers.

I'm not saying he's going to be Aaron Rodgers. So again - please please please please please please do not think I'm saying he's the next Aaron Rodgers, a guy I think is a top 10 QB of all-time. But the way he plays reminds me of Rodgers.

I felt some of the same feeling when AJ came in last year. The feeling is hope. I feel even better about Dungey because he seems to have a little more feel (and stronger arm) than AJ did. They are both playmakers. We haven't seen a dumb play yet out of Dungey. A few bad throws yes but he is making good decisions and more often than not converting. I'm looking forward to the rest of this season but this kids potential is off the charts.

This kid must have a killer crossover on the BBall court. Amazing how smooth and easily he avoids defenders. Can totally see basketball moves on the football field from him... Late passes over the middle of the field against great teams is a bit worrisome, but Eric seems to have excellent downfield vision...

I've already gone on record saying I think he leaves as our all-time leader in TD passes. Hopefully that means he has an All-ACC season in him or two.

Still also a believer in Long though.

I was incredibly excited about AJ too and then as the games went on he really started making a lot of questionable decisions. Who wouldn't have though with the way the OL played and the play calling. So I hate too excited.

But, I feel like he has a larger skill set and higher ceiling than AJ. Instead of saying what's already been said there are a couple other things that stood out to me. I believe early in the game and I believe it was Ish near our end zone. There was some miscommunication between the two. Eric wanted/or thought Ish was going to do one thing and vice versa. After the play was over Eric went over to Ish as they were coming off the field and was communicating with him about the play. You could see in his demeanor he was doing it exactly you would want to see, not blaming, not pissed, not making excuses. That's what I took from watching it on TV. That's how you build respect with your teammates and that's how good players get better together, one of the most important things I saw all day. I like his touch a lot, he's made some short passes with touch and accuracy that don't look like difficult throws but in the past we've found our QB's have a lot of trouble making those short passes. Especially out wide.

With Culpepper's work ethic being reported as the same as Dungey's was, what other high school Q.B'S would not want to jump on the bandwagon going forward working with two cerebral players going forward. We can thank Mr. Hunt for that, and that is what real team players do.They make everyone around them better and want to be an Orangeman.

He is an athlete, plain and simple. A basketball player, a long jumper and a high jumper in high school. He has all the tangibles to excel at this level and the next level as well. Lets hope our line can give him time to make plays. I am excited and very optimistic for the future of SU football. Between him and all the young athletes we have got in on both sides of the ball, the future is definitely looking brighter than the recent past.

I remember people calling AJ a "gamer"- a guy who makes things happen. Everyone so far is saying Dungey has the potential to be a greater quarterback. I think that's the difference.

I definitely see the comparison and understand your disclaimer.

ED has a chance to be special. Without question, the best athlete at the position since McNabb.

Very exciting development that we have a true frosh w this much moxie. He's going to be a godsend for this program if he takes where he is and expands on it every year. I think the sky is the limit. Key now is to continue improving.

As a true compliment, he reminds me of when BC was getting Matt Ryan and Hasselbecks year after year. Those guys were just smart football players who complimented those BC teams and got them to a 8 win plateau yearly. That's what I want and a QB can do it pretty much on his own being a very competent game manager.

Color me excited.

I just saw this random twitter feed this morning...

Joshua Gleason ‏@JGleas Sep 12
Top Oregon HS prospect goes to Syracuse, wins first 2 games of year. Oregon HS prospects 2-5 signed with PAC-12 teams. None offered Dungey.

How did no PAC-12 schools offer Dungey?

Eric Dungey is shaping up to a be a star for Syracuse. What a game in his first career ACC game.

Syracuse may be actually become good at football again. Eric Dungey looks really good at quarterback for the Orange.

Would agree with you there for sure on the comparison. Their styles are similar for sure, both kind of laid back west coast guys too. Again, I am with you NOT COMPARING THEIR SUCCESS OR SAYING THAT DUNGEY WILL EVER GET TO THAT LEVEL OR EVEN TO THE NFL. Just a certain style.

I think AJ is a gamer but he has far fewer tools to work with including 5 inches of height and lack of arm strength.

Exactly. even with his hipped out fro he's 5-10" tall and slight, with below average arm strength

I don't want to dump on AJ because I like his moxy. However, I don't think AJ has anywhere near the skill set of Sunshine. AJ is 3" shorter, 20 lbs lighter, weaker arm and not any better runner. Most of all, Sunshine is far more advanced in reading defenses and more mature in the sense that he takes care of the ball. AJ plays like he is stil in HS forcing things to his favorite receiver and throwing into coverage. AJ may develop, but the only way he gets on the field may be if Sunshine gets injured. Wouldn't surprise me to see him transfer. He can play somewhere, just don't think it will be here.
