on why the only entities to ever have been given the tape were media outlets? I could understand not giving it to the SPD in 2002 since they blew him off with the SOL. But why not give it to the University? I truly don't get it. Davis went to the University but doesn't tell them about the tape? He wants justice and doesn't mention the tape? Seriously? At this point I tend to believe in the veracity of the tape, so what possible reason would there be to withhold?

So two of many questions: Why didn't Davis turn over the tape in 2005 and why did the PS and ESPN not attempt to validate the tape? Pretty much everything else I can kind of follow as to why this or that may have happened.

On a sidenote; did ESPN know the PS also had the tape and vice versa? Did they each know the other was investigating? If so, would they have compared notes? Or was getting credit for the scoop more important than potentially working together to get a pedophile off the street?

Here is mine...

The Post STandard and ESPN are both media outlets that get readership and viewership based on stories (often the more sensational the better). If you listen to the interviews, both knew they had something big, but both knew that without an independent corroboration that neither passed journalistic muster. However, I do not believe that Lang is what caused them to release the tape (and ultimately tell the story). The corroborating "evidence" was Jerry Sandusky. The reason they did not give the tape to SPD or the University is because it potentially deflates an explosive story that they will get credit for breaking.

Another thing:

How could ESPN say they didn't run the story in 2003 because they didn't have a 2nd person to corroborate the story... when they had a tape of a 2nd person doing just that? Lang is starting to look like a decoy. A way for ESPN to get the story out without having to explain themselves for sitting on the tape for 9 years. Saying they didn't have a corroborator is now clearly a lie.

It is such a bad lie, I cannot even believe they are putting it forth. I mean Waters yesterday was saying that while the tape is salacious it really doesnt get to the heart of the matter (paraphrasing here). That is just ridiculous. I mean at one point she is saying things like she saw them through a window. Is that not an eyewitness event worth questioning?

I can almost guarantee that when Sandusky/Penn State broke there were some really nervous people at ESPN and PS...

Here's one...you are not criminally liable if you turn in a doctored tape to a media outlet. You are if you do to a law enforcement agency
hmm... definitely worth considering... I didn't think of that before

Why not give the tape to SU? If he wanted to get back at Bernie, why not give the tape as proof to Bernie's employers (SU) and get him fired?

Also, after everything that has happened over the last week, there still hasn't been a reasonable explanation for how this went on until his late 20s. It's still hard to consider it "abuse" as long as that fact exists.

remember that story of the kid in, oregon? wash? where he claimed he was being recruited by cal and a few other schools, and then he held a presser and put on a cal hat and said he was going there?? yet the coaches at cal had never heard of him and only later did he admit that he never was recruited at all, by anyone.

davis story reminds me of that.

I keep going back to that too, but at the same time she never says how old he was when she saw them through the window. From the sounds of things he could have been a 25 year old man by then (and a man she had already sexed-up 7 years ag0). She never did specify an age, correct?

Still, the lamest reason I could think of is that they couldn't figure out a way to verify that was Laurie Fine's voice. Really, you could sit two 2nd Graders in a room and they could figure it out in 30 minutes if they had the same access as ESPN does to the sportsworld.

because she does not indicate specific dates . . . "you were just a kid" could easily mean 17 years old, within the age of consent. Davis has basically admitted to having had an adult, (at least quasi) consensual relationship with Bernie; if it began when he was 17 then he is technically not an abuse victim.
There just was not quite enough there for the legal departments to allow the media outlets to go forward at the time.
Sorry I am thinking there was enough for them to (a) follow up with parties, or (b) say "you know we should probably get this to authorities". I just dont believe Lang's "story" was the real reason they decided "now was the time". At least not anymoreso than the coach's wife possibly confirming the alleged victims story.

Youtube wasnt around then. They needed that fine invention to conduct their remaining due diligence...

I'm sure I heard Lang say, "this happened to my brother" (not my brother and me) after initially saying he was also molested by Fine. Maybe it's a small omission because he cares more for his brother's well being than his own, but it really struck me as strange to hear him say it that way.

I'm not entirely sure, but I theorize the smoke monster was involved somehow.
