Apparently the fade to Ishmael...

i wonder what Wilson saw matchup wise. If i recall Custis was being covered by a 5' 11" CB.

That is where a 6-5 kid is best used and I hate the fade but remember some 6-7 kid from Lville catching a few of those on us a few years back

Whatever it was, apparently Lester wasn't happy about the decision.

Chichester. I still have nightmares about that...

reminded me of playing hoops, getting stuck on a switch trying to front some big guy on the low post, ain't happening. At least there, you could hack the guy and make him earn it at the line!

The fade is a great call if you have Payton Manning playing QB. For SU not so much.

Now that everyone will know it's coming, Custis on the slant, or Custis to the back shoulder. Guaranteed TDs. Once you prove you can throw each of these, all of our red zones problems start to melt away.

With a guy as big as Custis, if he's got a 5' 10" DB on him, you throw it on 1st down and put it where he gets it or nobody gets it. Not much risk for the potential reward. AJ threw a couple of passes last week where he was taking a bit of a chance but putting it where our WR could make a play on it (the back shoulder throw to Ishmael). He seems to have a good feel, hopefully he and Custis can develop some chemistry.

I see the fade run all over college football. its just a throw to a spot on the field. its not really that hard a throw, more on the timing. we really need to find some kind of throws we can complete in the RZ if we want to make the running easier and score points.

I wonder if he just isn't as comfortable throwing the fade to the right as opposed to the left. The problem wasn't necessarily who he threw to, but that he didn't throw it high enough and deep enough to the corner. I think the DB breaks that pass up whether it's to Custis or Ishmael the way that it was thrown. It's supposed to be thrown where only one guy (the WR) can get his hands on it.

The beauty of being able to throw the fade and making the D respect that is that it also opens up the back shoulder throw at the goal line pylon. Hunt just doesn't have the touch to throw the fade.

And next year you add Enoicy at 6-5, on one side of end zone, Custis at 6-6 the other side, Ishmael running slant to the middle. Then defenses have to pick their poison.

Was his name urrutia or something? Could look up but wanted to make an honest guess and see if I remembered. Ugh

The throw was very good, that's what I'm more concerned with. As soon as I saw Custis on the field in single coverage, I told my wife it was going to him. Was somewhat surprised when they went short-side to Ishmael. The DB just made a great play to swat the ball out of his hands.

I was wondering why it went short side with a taller cb on Ishmael. Custis had wide side and 7 inches

Hopefully we see a lot of fades to Custis in the endzone. I mean, if you recruit a 6-6 former basketball player to be a receiver, isn't a jump ball in the endzone the EXACT situation you really brought him in to win?

I don't know about that - it looked like a pretty good throw to me. If that has been Custis I think he comes down with it.

It was an "ok" throw. Like I said, the fade should be put in a place where the only guy who can touch it is the WR. This was more of a jump-ball as it allowed the DB to catch up and get his hands on it. If the ball is thrown to the corner, Ish catches it and comes down 1-2 feet then out of bounds and the DB never catches him. Maybe Wilson erred on the side of caution not wanting to risk throwing the ball out of the end zone on 4th down. I called for a fade on 3rd down, but they inexplicably ran between the tackles. Run the fade on 3rd, if you're close, run it again, maybe to the other side. :noidea:

I agree that was not the call to make on 4th down. Any of the first three downs would have been far better.

I see it thrown a lot. I see it caught a little
