I called Alex Plavin’s post game show to suggest that this year’s team is not last year’s team and thus should not be charged with completing the “unfinished business” of last year’s team. I compared this year’s team more to the team two years ago that got off to an 18-0 start with a #3 ranking and wound up 27-8 and losing in the second round of the NCAAs. Fab Melo and Dion Waiters were ineffective that year but blossomed as stars the next year. He felt that this year’s team was “much better” than that team. Is it? Here are the per 40 minute and “net point” numbers form those teams, with my comments:

Comments: All three of our centers are better than Fab and Baye were as freshman but this team could sure use a Rick Jackson down low.

Comments: Fair and Southerland are better than Joseph and Fair were then but Southerland is no longer available to us. Grant’s numbers are actually similar to Southerland’s two years ago even if their skill package is different. Grant’s numbers may be a lot better by the end of the year with more playing time.

Comments: Triche is a better Triche. You might think of Cooney as being this year’s Jones but Mookie was actually much better. The interesting comparison is Scoop, who we always criticized for all his errors vs. MCW, who can be a spectacular talent. Scoop scored better. He had a lot of assists but not nearly Michael’s number. Michael is a much better rebounder and gets more steals. Both missed a lot of shots for a point guard. Michael makes more turnovers. We remember Scoop’s coming at all the wrong times but Michael makes a lot of ill-timed gaffes, too, mostly from trying to do too much. With Scoop, you sometimes wondered what the plan was. Dion Waiters wasn’t the player he became but we don’t have anyone like him now.
I think the 2010-11 team was better inside and is now better at the forward positions since we don’t have Southerland. I might take this year’s backcourt but with the lack of depth it’s close. I think the teams, overall, are comparable, although the strength and weaknesses are different. We’ll see how this looks at the end of the season.
