This year could be very good next year has the makings of being special. Boatman, Bromley, Crume, Sloan, Zion, Williams, Coleman, Sharpe, Manley, Simmons, Brewster, Goggins, Welsh, Hilliard, Robinson. If im correct next year we only lose Boatman, and Goggins.

Bromley has NFL written all over him as does Williams. Sloan Crume and Zion are Monsters and the DE's on paper look as good as anything we have had in years with a nice combination of size and speed guys. All in all i think that we could be in for one hell of a D as we enter the ACC.

Wayne Williams. He's either talking next years D-Line or lumping him in with current players?

I think the 2000 DL is laughing right now.

DTs- Downing, Simpkins, Holtzman, Ferrara, Gachlein
DEs- Freeney, Pettijohn, Josh Thomas

Athlon's 2012 CFB mag has our DL ranked 7th in the big east, above only Temple. I think our DL is grossly underestimated, and will be a strength of the team.

Phil Steele's 2012 mag. says about the SU DL "They have two starters back once again and add in 2 JC's and could be stronger." So he's hedging but is more positive than Athlon.

Thats 12 years ago are current players would have been in 1st or 2nd grade. Take Freeney away and Next years group might be better

But you asked if we are close to our best DL ever so that includes 12 years ago regardless of how old our current players were then. And yeah, if you take away Freeney etc. But that makes no sense, with all due respect. He WAS on the team. If you take away any team's best player, they aren't as good.

If you take McNabb away then the 2012 QBs might be our best in the last 20 years.

Good point i guess ever is a long time! and i agree that you cant take Freeney away so i stand corrected i still think that the DL talent we have this year and will have next is going to be pretty special.

That we can agree on! If we can stay healthy, I think they have a chance to be solid group. By the way, are you in the Kansas City area? (just going by the kc in your screen name). Just curious because I'm in Overland Park.

We just lost our best DL since Freeney and people are saying this DL is our best ever before half of them arrive on campus... :bang:

We actually lost him for way to many games. It is a shame he couldnt have been healthy these last two years as he would have made an even bigger impact. I really like Bromley, Boatman, Crume, Googins and was impressed with Sloan during the spring game. Sure he was playing against a make shift line but he looked like a player. Add in Robinson Sharpe Simmons and the newbies and there is a chance this group will end up being very good

I'm not convinced that Chandler is better than Arthur.

Regardless, we are going into next season with both of our ends leaving, and not much depth behind them, banking heavily on JUCOs when we aren't sure they will translate i.e. Goggins, and having unrealistic expectations of high school graduates i.e. Manley and Hilliard. We're returning a DE that has been a situational speed rusher and undersized, and one of two players that has never really seen game action and also might be a bit small. Color me skeptical, but this is the position I am most worried about for next year.

No

Don't confuse depth with talent.
I agree. I don't see any future NFL starters on this unit. It is not remotely close to the best DL unit Syracuse has ever had.

If you go back to SU circa the mid 1980s, we had players like Tim Green, Blaise Winter, Jaime Kimmel, Bill Pendock, Ted Gregory and Paul Frase. All those guys except Pendock played in the NFL. If you go back to the late 1950s, you have a similar situation. The 1959 team had a tremendous DL that was the best in all of college football.

The good news is that enough though we do not have any star level players on this unit, for the first time in a long time, we are developing some decent depth. Hopefully there is enough talent to stop the run and finally start putting some pressure on the QB.
