Gallery: Syracuse Tops Army at Dome, 12-9 (LaxMag)

Dylan Donahue and Ben Williams were the stars on a late February Sunday evening at the Carrier Dome, anchoring the No. 2 Orange victory over a tough visiting No. 19 Army squad, 12-9.

Donahue scored five goals and added an assist, while Williams went a dominating 21-for-25 at the X as Syracuse improved to 3-0 on the season. Randy Staats also had a big game, scoring twice and assisting on four more...

Reaction: No. 3 Syracuse, No. 15 Army (IL: Rahme)

Ben Williams continues to be the steal of the century for the Syracuse University lacrosse team, a guy nobody in the lacrosse world knew much, if anything, about three short months ago.

Williams, a sophomore transfer from Holy Cross, won 21 of 25 face-offs Sunday night to propel the No. 3 Orange (3-0) to a hard-fought 12-9 victory over No. 15 Army (3-1) before a Carrier Dome crowd of 2,561.The performance was on par with his 17-for-20 effort in an opening 21-7 victory over Siena but was even more critical, as Syracuse was tested mightily throughout by what could be Joe Alberici’s best Army team in his nine-plus seasons as head coach.

"I thought Williams was certainly the MVP of the game,” Alberici said. “He played terrific and gave them a lot of opportunities. I thought offensively we were pretty efficient. I also thought defensively we played quite well. I think it just came down to possession time.”..

Syracuse 12 - Army 9: Williams and Wardwell Lead the Orange (Nunes)

The Army Black Knights came into the Carrier Dome looking for a 4-0 start to its season, but the Syracuse Orange pulled out a tight win. Throughout the game both goalies played remarkably well, stopping point blank shots multiple times. Meanwhile at the faceoff circle, Ben Williams once again proved himself by taking 21 of 25 faceoffs...

The Syracuse men's lacrosse team maintained its current position in this week's national polls after last night's 12-9 victory against Army. The Orange stayed at No. 2 in the latest USILA Division I Top 20, and held onto the third spot in the most recent Cascade/Maverik Media Poll, released Monday, Feb. 23.

ACC MEN’S LACROSSE: PLAYERS OF THE WEEK ANNOUNCED (TheACC)

North Carolina’s Jimmy Bitter and Syracuse’s Dylan Donahue have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Co-Players of the Week, while the Orange’s Ben Williams has been selected as the ACC Defensive Player of the Week after keying their teams to wins over fellow ranked opponents.

Donahue scored a season‐high five goals and added one assist to finish with six points in the Orange’s 12‐9 home victory against No. 11 Army on Sunday, Feb. 22 at the Carrier Dome. The Camillus, N.Y., native scored three of Syracuse’s five first‐half goals. He also registered one goal and one assist during a 5‐1 third‐quarter run that sealed the game, and added his fifth goal of the night early in the fourth quarter. For Donahue, it was his 14th career hat trick. He also extended his point streak to 26 games.

Williams dominated the faceoff X in the Orange’s victory against No. 11 Army. The sophomore transfer from Holy Cross won 21 of the game’s 25 faceoffs, good for an .840 winning percentage. Mendota Heights, Minnesota, native’s performance helped keep the ball out of the hands of Army’s explosive offense, which entered the game averaging 18.67 goals per contest. Williams claimed all 11 faceoffs in the first half and 15 of the first 16. He did not lose a draw until the start of the third quarter. In addition, Williams picked up a career‐high 13 ground balls, tied for the ninth‐highest, single‐game total in school history.
