i get the frustration that scoring lags behind. but i don't worry about that as much. offenses that gain yards generally score if you give it time. we're the exception. it's crazy to be 24th in yards and 72 in scoring. we need a better kicker and I'll chalk up a lot of the gap to bad luck at the goal line and a few goofy calls that won't happen again.

marrone still makes some head scratching decisions but I think he might be getting better there. considering he's not loaded on offense - they have lots of warts - how can you not be thrilled with their output.

Generally, I value balance less than yards. Balance can be a luxury - if you can gain yards either way, it might be worth sacrificing a little to be prepared to play more defenses. we're not that balanced in yards which is fine with me but we're committing more to running which makes me happy.

the NW and Rutgers losses are disappointing but I look at the USF game as getting one of those back

You know millhouse if SU played east and west U's instead of USC and Minny they might have the points you so desired. I really believe that you have to look at this within the context of the schedule. I'm thrilled with how well they are playing.

Yep, USF did get us back one.

we really get no easy points. we get 20-25 yd Tds as our easy points. we have 1 score on ST or D. Some teams have 6-7. We have a handful of long plays 40-50 yds. Its not just FGs but all those red zone turnovers. You get 4-5 scores by the D and take away 3-4 red zone blunders , probably should have made 1 more fg . thats 50 points, thats puts us top 50 in scoring.

you cant always get scores by the D but we have to stop the turnovers. we gave NW 14 pts but not only that we were about to score and maybe start pulling away on the INT score.. 14 pt swing, 10 pt swing on the rutgers FG block.

Two doorstep FG's vs NWestern, two doorstop fails vs SBU, doorstep Int vs Minny, Int vs Pitt from the 9, doorstep fail vs Rutgers, two doorstep FG's vs Uconn, 1 doorstep FG and one fail vs USF = 62pts.

That's almost another 8 pts a game from inside the 5 that they didn't get. They get those they are tied for 30th.

Some of that is that we're flush with very good position receivers, but not a burner that can turn yards after the catch into a breakaway TD. Our running backs are the same way. Smith is a bruiser and has been great, but unlikely to break away from pursuit. PTG has been running east/wast too much and is dancing a bit too much. Seems like he's the best chance at breaking something, but he needs one cut and go. His hands must be suspect, I thought we'd see more wheel routes, screens, and dump-offs to get him with some open field in front of him.

Bottom-line is that we're not getting the big play TD from yards after the catch or big runs. It's almost like we have to make up for all of that with the Tank package and being really fundamentally strong in route running/play calling. (See: Nassib to West in 3rd Q at USF).

Great stat

Once or twice, you can chalk it up to bad luck.

When it happens game after game after game, it's not bad luck. It's a serious problem.

the start of the season was more play calling issues. since the Pitt game its been better, not every play will work down that deep and you wont always score TD's but we really left 7 points against USF, but then again when our D stops the other team is that US or Them?

and with a few more wins

Your right those are the points we left on the field and it is 8 ppg. But it doesn't mean we would be 30th. You have to do the same for other teams also.

well, not if you think you're abnormally snakebitten. i think it's usually a cheap excuse but this year i think it holds.

why assume that there's no such thing as luck? that's football, there aren't enough games for it to all even out. that's what makes it so much fun

I doubt there's another team in the country that has left that many off the board from inside the 5.

we may have left the most on the field. my point was that you can't just say we would be 30th, because we wouldn't. higher than we are? sure, but who knows how much higher without doing both sides of the equation.

I don't think we can call our problems snakebitten though. A FG kicker who hasn't had a very good year, but had one great game. An OL who was beaten on a few of the potential TDs. A fade that was executed horribly, and probably a bad playcall in general.

Things that are, and have been correctable in some cases. But not necessarily bad luck. QB trips on center's foot, ref makes a questionable holding call, DL who is getting beat by his OL sticks his hand up and tips a pass, holder bobbles a snap on a FG. Those things are more what I would consider in the bad luck category.

Yeah, I think teams that are among the top in scoring are usually really strong on the OL. We're improved but not there yet.

yeah, call them unforced errors

if they make those mistakes earlier in the drive, they don't end up with all those yards. whatever it is, it's goofy. so many stupid goofy plays.

bad luck would be an INT kicked into the air returned for a TD, an INT going threw a RCVR hands bouncing off his head getting intercepted. a FG blocked because a blocker slips on a field should be dry, a replay goof who forget to click "over rule " on his screen, a side judge who doesnt know the green part of the field is still in bounds, a backwards pass against NW ruled a lateral but one verse Pitt ruled as an INC.

but then bad luck only happens to our own teams.

I think the red zone became mental for us after the Stony Brook game. But the staff and players have done a good job getting them corrected. I know the Smith drop and Krautman doink do not support that, but in general we're more effective when close. Need to get Smith his first TD this season, would probably help his confidence.

Last two games: 0 turnovers and 77 points.

I'm hoping the goal line demons have been exercised with the 6 seconds to go, play to win the game last week.

Thought that was huge mentally.
