I hate uconn still but their situation in football entering this year was pretty extreme.  People were telling them to literally shut down the program and there were nasty op eds in newspapers to that extent.  Now being in a major conference isn't like pro sports where the worst team gets the 1st pick but you have some sort of continuity they didn't and just scheduling 12 games isn't a given if you don't want to play 8 roadies and 4 home games.  To crawl out of that is impressive Umass had longer and hasn't done it or come close even once and I think they lost to them last year.  Going forward for next year as a fan I'd much rather play whatever independent schedule they come up with than be in the AAC after all those teams left for the Big 12 I think its better overall and only 1 roadie where you are expected to lose by 50 for a paycheck.
