>UPREP FRESHMAN SETS STATE AND NATIONAL RECORD (GREAT READ 1MIN.)
By Carl Jones Posted Feb. 16, 2024/8:24 P.M. EST
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Earlier this winter UPrep freshman Gavin White cleared six feet eight inches in the high jump. What’s so significant about that? Well it’s special for a few reasons.
In just his second meet of the year, White broke the freshman state record that was set in 1987 by Joe Galleano. The ninth grader also tied the national record for the event.
“I knew he jumped 6’8 but I didn’t know it was a state record and I didn’t know if it was a national record at the time until someone told me,” said UPrep track & field coach Brian Smith. “Then Mile Split came out and said maybe two days later that it was a national record. I’m calling him and his Dad saying he just jumped a national record. Just posting it everywhere and he didn’t know that.”
White is a three-sport athlete and said that his first love is basketball. He has been a member of the Griffins varsity hoops program since the eighth grade.
“It’s kind of a struggle,” said White. “But not really when you have two coaches who communicate with each other. So you know when to go to track practice and when to go to meets.”
During eighth grade, White was asked by the track coaching staff to join the team. Smith cited his hops on the basketball court as a reason why they were intrigued.
Smith added that it’s been such a smooth and easy transition for White that he should consider giving track more attention.
“It’s been some conversations,” said Smith. “I know you love basketball, but you just jumped 6’8″ as a freshman. Nobody has ever done that as a freshman. You might want to reconsider who’s your first option right now.”
White made it clear that basketball was his first love, but is open to seeing where track takes him in the future.
“We kind of discussed that we know basketball is your first love, but we’ll work with you,” said Smith. “If you can make it at least twice a week for practice and then the meets are on this day. We’ll figure it all out.”
White will compete in the Section V Indoor Track & Field championships at Nazareth University from February 17-18.
