I just got the Athlon College basketball preview. I was looking at their ratings of 2019 recruits, which listed what school they are going to. SU's highest rated recruit is Brycen Goodine at #93. Quincy Guerrier is #119. Jesse Edwards is is #176 and Joe Girard is #195. I take these with a lump of salt that you'd need a pick-up truck to take home with you, (Guerrier is listed as 6-7 190 - when Athlon's article on Syracuse lists him at 6-7 215). But I couldn't resist making a point system, There were 200 players listed so I gave 200 points to the 31 guy, 1999 to #2 and so on and totaled the points for each school's recurits to come up with this ranking:

Memphis 1,038
Kentucky 821
Duke 723

There are all kinds of disclaimers here. The Guerrier weight thing suggest that these rankings are based on old information. Quincy is from Canada, Jesse from the Netherland and John Bol Ajak form the Sudan, so they are edge-of-the-radar types. Joe went to a smaller schools and the history of 50ppg guys is that they haven't had much success on the next level. they were middle sized fish in small ponds and have trouble adjusting to be part of an ensemble. These are evaluations of how they were as high school players. projecting them as college players is more difficult. In the end I trust the coaches who know more about these players than the evaluators do. From what i saw of the Italian games, all our guys can play and we've got more of them than we usually do.

That said, the rest of the country doesn't seem too impressed. They are looking what Penny Hardaway is doing at Memphis, where he has recruited no fewer than 9 freshmen and added a sophomore transfer from Kentucky. Seven of his guys made the top 200, including the #1 guy, 7-1 James Weisman and 6-9 Precious Achiwa, the #14 guy. Lester Quinones, a freshman guard said "Yeah, that's the plan. Just demolish teams with our talent." Can we do that?

Certain irony to the fact that JB has gone on record in the past as only recruiting in the NE and we end up with such an international look.

What bothers me is that JB has consistently said two things relevant to our big men:

- Big men take longer to develop than other players.

- Foreign players who didn't grow up playing the game take longer to develop.

So we keep recruiting foreign big men and get frustrated with their development.

Guerrier is much better than that. He wasn't ranked by multiple services because he played in Canada. 2 4 7 has him at 72. He's definitely our best recruit.

Still I can't avoid the feeling that we are searching for "hidden gems" because in the wake of our second probation, we don't want to get into the sweepstakes for the top players and what we might have to do to get them.

that theory falls apart when you consider that su has been heavily involved in sweepstakes for top 30 players right up to the very end, and even winning a few, this whole time
2014 chris mcculough
2015 malachi & thomas bryant
2016 tyus
2017 quade greene
2018 darius bazely
2019 isaiah stewart
2020 isaiah jackson

Than what's your theory for why we seem to be living in the 75-150 range lately instead of the 25-75 sweet spot that we were having sustained success with for most of the last 20 years?

Could tie to the recent FBI investigation.

Or our recent probation, where we were handcuffed to an extent.

And also, JB is getting old and isn't expending as much effort on the recruiting trail.

I'll take my chances with Quincy. Can't wait to see him play. I think he is ready. Plus we should see an improved Eli and Buddy, while not freshman, both will have a much larger role. This could be our deepest 3 pt shooting team, just in time for the longer three pt line. I think one of the Iggy tiebreakers this season might be made and attempted 3's for the team. I'll have to interrupt the committee from their offseason dailiances to see what they think.

Mike Hopkins is gone. He’s got Quade Greene and Isaiah Stewart right now. Probation too. Uncertainty on head coach. Other schools paying kids.

I’m guessing he’s a big fan of horseshoes.
