I just got the Athlon College basketball preview. I was looking at their ratings of 2019 recruits, which listed what school they are going to. SU's highest rated recruit is Brycen Goodine at #93. Quincy Guerrier is #119. Jesse Edwards is is #176 and Joe Girard is #195. I take these with a lump of salt that you'd need a pick-up truck to take home with you, (Guerrier is listed as 6-7 190 - when Athlon's article on Syracuse lists him at 6-7 215). But I couldn't resist making a point system, There were 200 players listed so I gave 200 points to the 31 guy, 1999 to #2 and so on and totaled the points for each school's recurits to come up with this ranking: Memphis 1,038 Kentucky 821 Duke 723 Gonzaga 673 Georgia 661 Villanova 650 Louisville 637 Southern California 583 Arizona 562 Florida 533 North Carolina 532 Kansas 531 Ohio State 480 Texas 449 Washington 420 Texas Tech 416 Oregon 414 Connecticut 351 Auburn 337 Oklahoma State 336 Alabama 331 Xavier 314 Florida State 313 Michigan State 305 Virginia 283 Texas Christian 272 U of Miami 270 Oklahoma 270 Tennessee 269 Maryland 260 Louisiana State 232 Indiana 224 Syracuse 221 DePaul 186 Harvard 180 Minnesota 180 Clemson 174 West Virginia 171 Missouri 159 Illinois 157 Cincinnati 156 Providence 138 Stanford 135 Marquette 130 Texas A&M 129 Arizona State 124 Virginia Commonwealth 123 Massachusetts 120 Iowa 118 UCLA 117 South Carolina 114 Nebraska 110 Butler 107 Wichita State 103 Virginia Tech 98 Northwestern 93 Michigan 92 Utah 91 Pittsburgh 89 Mississippi State 84 Mississippi 82 Purdue 78 North Carolina State 74 Houston 72 Vanderbilt 72 Georgetown 68 Long Beach State 65 Kansas State 64 Wake Forest 54 Davidson 53 Loyola Maryland 51 Rutgers 47 Baylor 46 Temple 44 Utah State 37 New Mexico 34 Gardner-Webb 33 Iowa State 30 Air Force 27 Cal State Fullerton 26 Seton Hall 23 Lamar 22 California 16 Wisconsin 8 Texas-San Antonio 7 There are all kinds of disclaimers here. The Guerrier weight thing suggest that these rankings are based on old information. Quincy is from Canada, Jesse from the Netherland and John Bol Ajak form the Sudan, so they are edge-of-the-radar types. Joe went to a smaller schools and the history of 50ppg guys is that they haven't had much success on the next level. they were middle sized fish in small ponds and have trouble adjusting to be part of an ensemble. These are evaluations of how they were as high school players. projecting them as college players is more difficult. In the end I trust the coaches who know more about these players than the evaluators do. From what i saw of the Italian games, all our guys can play and we've got more of them than we usually do. That said, the rest of the country doesn't seem too impressed. They are looking what Penny Hardaway is doing at Memphis, where he has recruited no fewer than 9 freshmen and added a sophomore transfer from Kentucky. Seven of his guys made the top 200, including the #1 guy, 7-1 James Weisman and 6-9 Precious Achiwa, the #14 guy. Lester Quinones, a freshman guard said "Yeah, that's the plan. Just demolish teams with our talent." Can we do that?
