Ok not to get too carried away with Southerland being back and not to be a jinx, but I'm trying to get on the ball and semi-ahead of the game (still on late side) and research where the best areas are. I know we have some Atlanta area members here so I'd love to hear about the good areas as far as proximity to Georgia dome and entertainment/nightlife, etc. Ideally what I'll probably do is find something in a decent area that is a decent deal relative to being final four weekend that is refundable and I could cancel if we don't make (Did this for NOLA last year). Either way though it's good to have some options on here for people to start looking at because it is coming very fast. Thanks for any suggestions.

I have never heard of a hotel room that is not refundable (if indeed you have to make a down payment)... as long as you cancel 24 or 48 hours in advance. Given that we will have more notice than that, hotel room charges should not be an issue. My experience with the Final Four is that FLIGHTS are the critical path. Game tix are always available and hotel rooms are always available... but flights seem to be the issue. In Atlanta, that may not be as much of an issue (since it is a Delta hub), but each time we were in New Orleans, flights were difficult.

Was thinking of Atlanta also today. My Mom was saying at dinner I need a vacation since I take care of everyone so much. I told her I am hoping to take the ultimate vacation in about 2 months!! I hope I can make travel plans, and get a ticket if we get there. Have never done a final four, and it is my time if we go. Passed up 4 of them so far.

Yeah I agree about the flights but in my case I'll be driving since not too far away, but from my experience of trying to attend big events (previous final fours/superbowl) most of the hotels have a non refundable policy so it's not a big mess of people booking and cancelling after their teams don't advance and because they can get such premium prices. For example in New Orleans last year virtually every hotel in the downtown or French Quarter area had a no refund if you booked the room. I was fortunate enough to find one that was on the other side of the river and refundable so just cancelled after we didn't make it, but I have some friends who have some big ties to North Carolina and were fully confident in them making Final Four so booked...and were stuck with the rooms even though Carolina didn't make it (not that they didn't mind a weekend of fun in NOLA ;))

All the activity in 2007 was in midtown. Team hotels included the Radison and the Mariott.

Since I live in the ATL 'burbs...I'd love to have the CUSE make it here! I'll even stock my bar with PBR's for Marsho1 and some Cono Sur pinot noir for cto :)

Generally the 3rd parties (expedia/hot-wires) have no cancel or 24 hour cxl policies. Better to book direct thru hotel but big events usually have deposit requirements with no cancel. The super bowl in NJ next year has 4 day advance pay with no cxl.

Having lived in Atlanta since 2004, I think I can provide a good perspective for fans rolling into town when Cuse arrives as one of the four teams left playing for the National title. As PoppyHart stated Midtown plays a central role in most major events being hosted in Atlanta.

I will temper things a little and throw out two other Atlanta area locations that might serve as real options for Otto's legion of fans. I would first suggest the Buckhead/Lenox/Phipps Plaza area. Two MARTA stations serve this area so no car needed to get around and MARTA is a cheap option being only $5 round trip. This area provides lots of high end hotels and decent food/bar options.

The second location would be the Perimeter Mall area which is on the north side of Atlanta and again features two or three MARTA stations within easy walking distance depending on hotel selection. Food options and bars are plentiful in the Perimeter area. The hotels near Perimeter might not require any prerequisites for length of stay, etc.

Now both locations are 10 or 12 miles from the Georgia dome and require a little creativity to get to and from the games, I.E figuring out a train schedule and what time to leave for the pre-game bar run near the team hotel etc...

Atlanta is an easy in easy out city when flying (I have flown 500k miles since 2004 so i speak from experience) or driving from the north.

I would be more than happy to offer more info to anyone who would like specifics like hotels, restaurants, bars, and tourist locations.

The good thing about Atlanta is that flights are reasonable.

This thread is killing me. I've been going to Atlanta after Christmas for 32 years. As soon as I realized the Final Four would be there this year, I've been thinking, "No... no... it's too good to be true." On the one hand, I don't want to jinx it. On the other hand, I believe in putting positive thoughts out into the universe. I'm a spiritual Jekyll & Hyde! And . . my 87 year-old step mother-in-law is STILL ALIVE! Surely the stars are lined up and the moon is in the Seventh House! Now, "all" we have to do is get there.

Last year I found a LaQuinta about 10 miles outta downtown NOLA with just a 24 hr cancel...You might look at the suburbs. Book there for now. If Cuse makes the F4...then make a mad look for downtown as others cancel. Worst case you are out in the suburbs and you drive in and park.

BTW, LaQuinta's chain wide take pets and are usually very nice 3 star like properties.

For Syracuse Locals...if we get lucky enough don't forget to check Rochester as AirTran(SouthWest) offer flights in addition to Delta.

Being on a Marta bus on Sat. night is not something I would recommend.
no - don't take the buses - train stops only

and Midtown should be first option, followed by downtown, then Buckhead and then Decatur IMO

Hmm, the 13th post in a Final Four thread in mid February strikes me as asking for trouble, like drawing Butler again in the sweet sixteen. So let me just say I hope the following information is useful to all college basketball fans, whatever the team (even Butler fans).

Lodging. Marta is a light rail transit system in Atlanta. There is a NS line and a EW line. The Airport is at the southern end of the NS line and you can take the train instead of a cab to all these place to stay or you may want to take a cab the first time to orient yourself, Marta is much cheaper though, you can get on right at the airport. The Dome is on the EW line, one or two stops West of where the 2 lines cross. You will have to change trains to get to the Dome from all these places but the Marta system is used to transporting lots of people to the Dome for concerts Hawks, Falcons, whatever. Take it and stay at a place within walking distance to a station, there are lots.

There are a 4-5 large convention hotels in Midtown, a marriott, a couple Westin's including the Peachtree Plaza (if you remember an old movie called Sharkey's machine, you will recognize this one), if this is where the teams stay, you can try to get a room at one of these or there are a number of satellite hotels around the big ones, or even a Ritz if you are the upscale type. The problem with this area (lets call it the Convention area) is there is not that many restaurants or bars around, a few more than there used to be, but not a lot.

I am going to recommend Embassy Suites, three different versions all on the marta line to the Dome. They are generally cheaper and they get a lot of use, but they keep them up really well and I have stayed at all of them, plus each room has a outer room (suite) built in if you want to have private get togethers. They serve a free breakfast in the morning and usually offer a free manager's cocktail hour at nite. The breakfast is decent for a free breakfast, its nice not to worry about that.

The closest to the Dome is the Embassy Suites Centennial Park. This is deep downtown, near the Dome. You can walk to any Dome related festivities or the game, but there is not that much to do, eat and drink wise, that far downtown. There may be more action down there during the FF weekend.

Embassy Suites Buckhead is on the main Peachtree Street, you are 7-8 miles away from the Dome, but in the heart of Buckhead, the nitelife capital of Atlanta (except for those of you that prefer a more urban (hip hop) atmosphere, but I will leave that to someone else. A couple blocks north of this hotel there are 2 big malls (Lenox and Phipps) a couple more blocks south is the bar/party area for Atlanta. Good restaurants around, all you could want walk or short taxi. Two marta stations are nearby, one on Peachtree and one at Lenox.

Embassy Suites Perimeter is 10-15 miles up the Marta line. I have stayed there a number of times. It is right next to the Marta station. You can walk to everything from a Chipolte's to some higher end restaurants if that suits your taste. Plenty of variety for a weekend. Perimeter mall and subsidiary strip malls with restaurants, movies, stores are all around.

From any of these Embassy Suites you can take the Marta to the Convention area if you want to visit the team hotels.

Hope this is the kind of information you were looking for.

What do folks figure (ballpark) an SU sponsored package might cost - hotel, tix, flight?

marta is the worst transit in the world.

seriously. I have tried to support it. Its horrible. i voted on a tax to help improve it, which lost miserably.

as of now it has 4 main end points. 3 of which are not friendly.

yes. Rochester is usually 30-50+% cheaper than syracuse

Before I posted, I considered the "jinx" aspect of this. Then I said "Are you kidding me???" Did worrying about the jinx aspect help me out the past 2 years? Did it keep AO from getting injured, and Melo from being declared ineligible? I decided that maybe it is better to just express my expectations, because the other way did not work out so well.

Now, for all of you who live in Atlanta...I'm making my reservation now for your spare bedroom, lol!!

You do realize that some if us who "live in Atlanta" don't really live "in" Atlanta, right. Some of us would actually be looking at lodging as well.

My personal situation actually has me associated with 2 of the current top-6/7 schools. I'm hopeful that I have an Orange reason to go.

I had tickets in hand for last year's FF... I'll probably hold off on that aspect until this year the time is right.

Aunt and Uncle live in Alpharetta, so I'll be booking a flight at my earliest convenience.

that's a pretty expensive cab ride to downtown/midtown.
He can probably either take MARTA in to town or I can give him a lift.

I'm not sure about the getting back part...
