Umm… starting with our first game vs. Charlotte at 2:30, November 25, my birthday, (it’s great getting older but enjoy being younger while you can!), not counting the results and play from our games with Lehigh, Bonaventure and Elon, will tell us a great deal about this year’s team. I am usually not this tentative about the beginning of the season – probably due to the fact that since 1962 when I was a walk - on freshman quarterback and ever since then there seemed to be at least one or two SU players who were very good or very, very good and about to be great like Dave Bing. I was a spotter for the official scorer at all the games in Manley and out of the gate we began to get better and better. (By the way, everything you’ve heard about the atmosphere and game experience in Manley is true - only better). I opened cto’s post about this early tournament and with one eye shut, peeked at the teams that will be sunning themselves in the Bahamas. Let’s see, among the teams involved aside from us, only Charlotte and Washington are un-talked about pre-season. Otherwise according to the various preseason rankings - AP, USA Today Coaches, CBS Sports, etc. – Gonzaga is either #9 or #11, UConn is #20 or #24, Texas A & M also #24, and Michigan #25. Texas has votes. So, Charlotte seems to be a good first game opponent. Eight teams, five with preseason ink and position. You may think I’m chicken, a worrier, or that I have no optimism about this year’s edition of SU basketball but only part of that is true. I have no feathers so guess which one I’m on. BUT, just maybe I’m way out of line and we are going to be pleasantly surprised about the outcome – threes from all over getting only net, good ball handling, passing, many assists from our appointed point guard and others and a not a lick of turnovers from Richardson, Howard, Gbinije, Cooney, Joseph, whatever the combination. Beating the Zags would be like delicious, hot gravy on the turkey and mashed potatoes. And, maybe we’re going to be able to enjoy a nice slice of tasty, Thanksgiving dessert pie from this team even if we don’t win the whole thing! Whipped or ice cream toppings if we do! Hope so. Go SU!!!!
