B1G Network

The question is: Did the B1G meet their per box asking price?

These decisions aren't being made by stupid people.

The stupid people are the ones paying for a channel they'll probably never watch.
nope.

my Kingdom for rutgers in the ACC.

this was a nicely played game of chess by delaney.

I love seeing Edsall's tweets, he is just such a positive and enthusiastic guy! Why does he have to be an SU alum, it would be that much easier to hate him otherwise. Which I do anyway. No matter what, these two schools have athletic departments that are in financial hell and that is a bad thing for the Big 10.

As the article conveniently ignores the issue, can we assume the B1G did NOT received the $0.80-$1.00/home/month charge they so prominently used in their estimates?
It's always been safe to assume that NJ and MD would end up with the network on cable, the real key is how much the B1G is getting. In the end, Rutgers is getting a cut share of the revenue and is going to fall way behind their conference mates. They're also going to fall behind Syracuse over the next few years in revenue.

Agreed. Rutgers is so far behind in actual revenue (Reported revenues less subsidies) that they may not truly benefit from being in the B1G for decades.

The real announcement will be made when we discover the rates the BTN is getting. This is what is the real issue. The BTN floated numbers of $0.80-$1.00/household/month to sell the B1G on bringing in UMD and Rutgers. The numbers were revised to $0.30-$0.60/household/month. This still seems high for two schools with little to no fan base. If they get $0.10/household/month, money is made, but not quite the same as the original projections and maybe not enough to actually pay for either school, let alone both schools.

I never underestimate Delany and the Big Ten's ability to dominate college athletics when it comes to $$$.

It's on the field athletics product is another matter - decent but not high caliber championship level.

Cheers,
Neil

Once YES was bought by FOX...it was game over for the NJ cable companies.

It's not just the price per subscriber, the B1G also wants placement of the BTN on the regular cable tier w/ESPN1/2 so they get the money for every subscriber not just getting the money for those subscribing to the premium sports tier where it was placed before.

Jim Delany and the Big 1?, the Bally's Fitness of the NCAA. They're not selling product, they're selling subscriptions/contracts.

Some things to keep in mind:

1. To determine the increase, you have to back out the previous customers who were paying to get the BTN on a high tier.
2. Going to basic will increase the number of subscribers, but that's only part of the equation. The amount that each subscriber pays is the other part, and that amount is probably low.
3. Having Rutgers and UMD costs the B1G 2x the B1G's average per school yearly payout.
4. Moving to basic will increase ratings and thus advertising revenues.

Overall, it's a mixed bag. Overall, it's probably good for the conference, but there are way too many questions to say anything worthwhile for sure.

Unless Rutgers or Maryland make serious noise, their fan bases will remain small and the BTN will not be able to capitalize on growth the way they need for advertising and increased rates.

if the conference really hard to get it on basic cable, there's probably a reason for it, probably not a mixed bag

It's not that simple. However, never underestimate RU's ability to fall on its face. The same goes for UMD.

They already are way behind.
