Rutgers. The gift that keeps on giving even as they recede into the horizon in SU’s rear view mirror. Jim Delany visiting Rutgers decried the apparent lack of enthusiasm over the prospect of joining the B1g 10. Tom Luicci of the Star Ledger (http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index.ssf/2013/06/big_ten_commissioner_jim_delan_1.html#incart_river_default) wrote: “Unlike the Big Ten’s most recent expansion efforts – with Penn State in 1993, Nebraska in 2011 and now, Maryland in 2014 – Delany indicated that Rutgers hasn’t yet shown the type of enthusiasm over its league move that he would expect.” Look Jim, first this isn’t a Midwestern state where the population actually associates itself with the State University. And these people know that the B1g selected Rutgers solely because of the number of cable subscribers in the State. It had nothing to do with actually wanting RU teams in the B1G. The RU coaches probably feel like the Polish police chiefs after the German Army took over the country in 1939. The Germans were telling them how great it was going to be, but the police chiefs had concerns. What the coaches may be thinking about is the high probability that they are going to spend the next few years of their lives getting steamrolled by these Midwestern behemoths until they are given their pink slips for failing to compete. Life was simpler when they played Providence and St Johns and Georgetown. If Delany thinks there was a lack of enthusiasm in New Brunswick, wait till he gets to College Park, MD where just about everyone would prefer to stay in the ACC. They were acquired by the B1G because they had run out of money and if they hadn’t they would still be in the ACC. Wait till you hear the crap the UM administration catches after this upcoming Winter’s last games against Duke and Virginia and North Carolina when it really sinks in with the Terp fan base. The screaming is going to be tremendous. Nobody wants to go … except the UM President.
