I just got back from my family reunion cruise. I was unable to watch the Pitt game but saw some of the key plays in the ESPN highlights. It actually sounds like a great game, with multiple comebacks but a very frustrating one for SU.
It seems like our run defense is a real Achilles heel and that there are teams we will play will be able to exploit that. I recall being told that we didn't need Kayton Samuels any more because we'd recruited better athletes. I wonder if he could have made a difference. Any time you lose your entire linebacking corps from the previous year, you are going to be vulnerable.
I don't understand the concept of the final play in the newspaper: three options, Johnson to the corner of the end zone, Custis underneath and Dungey can run it. Why not have the tall guy going to the corner and have Johnson in the middle?
Thanks to Florida State's bad start, the four worst teams we were to play this year were the first four teams and we went 4-0. But we still had Clemson on the ropes, so i think we are a good team. but not so good we can win with less than our 'A' game.
I see some people want DeVito to play instead of Dungey. By my accounting, Dungey has been our quarterback for 72 1/2 possessions in which we've scored 215 points, or 3.0 per possession. DeVito had been our quarterback for 19 1/2 possessions in which we've scored 33 points, an average of 1.7. And DeVito's possessions were all against those first four bad teams. (Dungey and DeVito shared a possession vs,. Florida State in which we we gained 16 yards under each. A field goal was kicked while DeVito was the QB so i credited those points to him.) Dungey is a senior, DeVito a redshirt freshman. Dungey is the starter, DeVito the future.
We should focus on our goal at the beginning of the season: get to 6 wins and a bowl game. We are capable of more than that but we shouldn't forget that that was our primary goal. Let's get that done and then we can dream bigger.
