But the fact that the claims objectively probably aren’t legitimate does. Going by every documented mainstream definition that I saw, there aren’t connotations. And, even if there are connotations, they’re so secret as to not be reflected in, at a minimum, a substantial number of mainstream sources (dictionary.com, google definitions, urbandictionary.com), which strongly suggests that the 54 year old guy who said them isn’t sufficiently in the loop to reasonably be accused of implying the connotations - barring some other evidence of intent (such as only saying the term to African American players or coupling it with over racial slurs).

Given that the guy has coached hundreds, if not thousands, of African American players, almost entirely without incident or complaint, it’s hard to not notice that the ~3 former players have an obvious ulterior motive and a flimsy argument that’s coupled with opportune timing.

The specter of racism isn’t hiding behind every bush, and not every exchange is a legitimate opportunity to virtue signal.
