They keep saying Montee Ball could break Barry Sanders' record for touchdowns today. That's because the offical NCAA stats now, (since 2002) include bowl games.

In 1988 Barry Sanders, in 11 regular season games, carried the ball 344 times for 2626 yards, (7.6 per carry), and 37 touchdowns. He also caught two touchdown passes for a total of 39 touchdowns. In the 62-14 Holiday Bowl win over Wyoming, he carried 29 times for 222 yards, (7.7) and 5 scores. He didn't catch a TD pass. That's a total of 44 touchdowns in 12 games, inclduing the bowl game.

Montee Ball has already played 13 games, inclduing the Big Ten title game. He's carried 275 times for 1759 yards, (6.4) for 32 scores and has caught 6 TD passes for 38 scores. He's have to score 7 times vs. Oregon to really break Barry Sanders record and then he would have done it in 14 games.

I have no problem with including bowl results in individual stats for the season. In basketball NCAA tournament stats are part of the season stats. But they should do it retroactively so we don't have this phony breaking of records. Also, like basketball, everything should be in pre game averages. Sanders scored 3.67 touchdowns per game. Ball has scored 2.92 TDs per game. Not even close.

they did offer the schools the option of applying stats going back. not sure what happened with all that.

Why would it be an option? Some schools might do it and others not, although I don't know why not.

originally the rule was to allow teams to retro all the stats.. however since so few teams played bowl games early on it was felt that some teams that played in many bowl games got a favor by including the stats. teams have the rights to do so but they will not be reflected by the NCAA record book. I changed my database to include the games since it really only changed a couple dozen players and in reality the advent of 12 game seasons and conf games has skewed the numbers much more the ncaa should just allow all games to count..

Yeah, I hear what you're saying. Barry was ridiculous and it's sad to see one of his records broken this way, but it is the way of things. Jim Brown's NFL career yardage record may still be standing if he played 16 games per season instead of twelve. Eric Dickerson may not break OJ's single season record if he only has 14 games to do it in.

Why should be the way of things that all games count now and they didn't before?

They should count all games and use per game averages. If we are talking about NCAA records, it should be controlled by the NCAA.

Yeah, but this isn't the same. For the guy that played in less games, they aren't actually using all the games he even played in. If records now will include bowl games, then it should be retroactive. Shouldn't be a choice. Otherwise, just don't keep records.

I get that records will be broken because of more games. Maris (the most famous one), Dickerson, all the MLB playoff records now that there are so many playoff games. That's going to happen. This is just a completely different situation.
