they're 4th in the country in attempted 4th downs. the teams ahead of them have horrible records and are desperate

that and the tempo at which they play allow them to jump over teams who are better per play

louisville is 23rd in 4th down attempts. they're 91st in yards per play and 80th in yards per game. even though they're not good in yards per play, going for it more seems to help their offensive yards per game.

Briles gets it. It's not just because of speedsters there

Syracuse is 6 for 10. That's 28th in the country. Why are we 82nd in 4th down attempts?

This is dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb

Auburn has attempted 2 4th downs all year. That baffles me. maybe they get a first down every time before 4th down...

So D was right?

Yards more important than number of plays?

You sir are the definition of confirmation bias, you will find any data to prove your point.

Fourth down attempts:
Auburn - 2
Florida State - 2
Alabama - 6

"Boy that Baylor guy is an idiot going for it so often, if they didn't go for it so much on 4th down they'd clearly be undefeated/ranked higher." Look how good I am at proving points.

Also, of course Louisville going for it on 4th a lot improves their yards per game. If they convert even once all season they have more yards than if they never went for it. It's a tautology, teams who go for it on 4th will inevitably have more yards. The analysis you didn't do is what is the correlation between going for it on 4th and points given up on defense. I'd wager that my group from above gives up less points than your group that goes for it all the time, which includes such powerhouses as UMass, Washington State, and Purdue.

I actually happen to agree with your point that we should go for it on 4th down more, but the arguments you made for it provided absolutely no basis for doing so.

That is really interesting about auburn ! I totally should've mentioned them

You should read the post before biting ankles

Auburn is better in yards per play

My point was that Baylor leapfrogs better yards per play teams by going for it. No sht auburn and Alabama are great, I never said you need to go for it a lot to be great

And if field position and momentum and all that stuff matter then it's not tautologous. Nice try

So you're saying that going for a few 4th downs each game (even if 4th downs plays typically are less than 5 yards) is the reason they have more yards per game? The 10 yards they get for going for it 4th contributes more than just simply playing faster (more plays per game)?

It's not just the ten yards, it's all the plays the run after that in that possession

Sorry.

I guess I was befuddled by your failure to use the word "crap" in your post.
