As someone from the Midwest, I am far from a traditionalist when it comes Northeast football. My first SU game was at the Orange Bowl in 1993 as a University of Miami student. I transferred to the University of Wisconsin and did not give much thought to SU football until becoming a student in 1997. The first game was my new school (SU) giving the school I just graduated from (UW) a beat down at the Meadowlands. I was lucky as two of my three years on the Hill coincided with McNabb's time. One of the things that struck me was the lack of a specific rival in football; one that both fan bases acknowledged. Miami had FSU, Wisconsin had Minnesota. Syracuse had ? Perhaps it was because I was no longer an undergrad and I was out of the loop, but it did not seem there was one school on the schedule ever year we looked forward to playing and beating. Could Boston College be that team? Maybe. Both schools draw from the same regions. I just have a had hard time getting excited about BC. Not to be blasphemous, but the basketball games I always looked forward to were not Georgetown, rather, it was UConn. The dislike I had for UConn basketball bled over to football once UConn joined the Big East. I thought SU/UConn was turning into a pretty good rivalry (it least in my own mind) before the implosion of the league. This is one of the reasons I am an outlier here and would not mind seeing UConn joining the ACC. Not that we would ever be its first and most important rival, but for the same reasons, I would love to be in the same division as Duke. Based on the schools recent battles in basketball, I think the fan bases could develop a wonderful dislike for each other in all sports, including lacrosse. I am not sure there is another team in the ACC currently that I would like to see SU play on an annual basis. Duke is a team we should be competitive with in football, is a peer of SU, and is a game I think could get the fan base excited.
