BE super conference...

Good grief that's a football nightmare. A collection of hideous blights on the term "higher education" (hello there, UTEP, East Carolina, UNLV, etc) and one-time also rans (hiya Colorado State!) and other BCS hangers on essentially trying to say, "look, we're Division 1 programs and the 32 of us ought to be allowed to advance one of us to a BCS bowl game."

It looks like the losers bracket of a basketball tournament trying to fight for some sort of relevance and seat at the big boys table.

This would be great for the ACC, B1G, Pac-12, SEC and Big 12. If this collection of misfits existed in 2009, the BCS would only have had to give a bid to one of TCU, Boise and Cincy, not all three. If this monstrosity forms, then then those 28+ schools will only have one bid between them, instead of the three potential bids they suck up now.

That was already discussed below. IMO it would be lazy and dumb of the BE to even consider it. As of now the rumor is just WV leaving for the B12. If that happens then the BE is at 5 FB and 13 BBall teams. So why can't the BE just do this...

Offer a FB only merger with the MWC conference.

MWC would agree to add SMU and HOU for all but FB, bringing the league to 12 teams in non FB sports.

SMU and HOU would join the BE for FB only. By doing this you prevent bringing down the value of BE BBall. Also it would prevent travel costs in non FB sports.

BE adds Temple for FB only to add Philly market. Temple would remain A10 in BBall.

BE adds UCF and Memphis for all sports. One helps FB, the other BBall. Also it adds markets, as well as Bowl possibilities.

This set up would make the BE a 10 team FB conference and a 15 team BBall conference. While the MWC would be a 10 team FB conference and a 12 team BBall conference. Why consider crappy WAC teams or crappy CUSA teams?

So the winner of the MWC (Hawaii, Fresno St, SD St, Nevada, UNLV, Boise St, Air Force, CSU, Wyoming, NM) would face the winner of the BE (UConn, RU, Temple, Louisville, Cincy, Memphis, USF, UCF, SMU, HOU) for the BCS bid.

The FB contracts and Bowl tie ins would be separate. They only share the CG money and BCS bid.

The BE would be adding Philly, Memphis, Orlando, Dallas, and Houston to its FB TV markets. It would be adding Orlando and Memphis to its BBall markets. More importantly the BBall only schools would be taking on just two new schools. So they wouldn't have to worry about getting left with crap should other FB schools eventually leave.

The MWC would be adding Dallas and Houston to its BBall TV markets. But most importantly the MWC gets access to an at large bid. Thats why they agree.

Fo BBall you would have...

MWC East- HOU, SMU, NM, Air Force, CSU, Wyoming
MWC West- Boise St, UNLV, Nevada, Fresno St, SD St, Hawaii

BE North- UConn, ND, Marq, RU, DePaul
BE South- Louisville, Memphis, Cincy, USF, UCF
BE East- GTown, Nova, St Johns, Seton Hall, PC

Utah St, SJ St, UTEP, Tulsa, Marshall, USM, Tulane, UAB, Rice, La Tech, and ECU are all garbage. No reason to add any of those for FB. Navy would be an option but they would bring a scheduling conflict, having to play ND, Army, and Air Force every year. If you add Navy to BE FB, do you count the Air Force game as a conference game? Also can Navy compete in FB?

The key to the BCS bid IMO is Boise St. So why not do something that would keep them happy? The BE needs them more than they need the BE.

Which brings up the point of why doesn't Boise St work with the MWC to raid the BE? Louisville, Cincy, and USF don't really care about the NE catholic schools. I am sure they want to break away. So why not offer those three, UCF, SMU, and HOU to create a super conference? I left out UConn and RU because they are too far East and it may be difficult to convince UConn to leave behind BE BBall. This would certainly get a BCS bid.

That would create FB divisions of...

MWC East- UCF, USF, Cincy, Louisville, HOU, SMU, NM, Air Force
MWC West- Hawaii, Boise, Fresno St, SD St, Nevada, UNLV, CSU, Wyoming

For BBall you set up 4 pods. It would be a decent league.

Louisville, Cincy, USF, UCF
NM, Hou, AF, SMU
UNLV, Nev, CSU, Wym
Fresno, SD, Boise, Hawaii

It would still be easier for someone from there to get a BCS bid than from the other conferences

But at least the money is concentrated.

Ugh I hate that I don't care about the BCS as much now that we're firmly in the club.

Good

What a joke. None of these conferences deserve an AQ individually and combining the same assets does nothing to change that. Marinatto is just totally incompetent. Why would the remaining BE schools want to combine into a 32 team conference with the dregs of the dregs? Wouldn't a better alternative be to just take the 5 BE survivors and add the 11 best teams from CUSA/MTW and form a 16 team conference with east/west divisions?

Marinatto: We'll make it up in volume!

Yes it would. However you ignore two things. One that there are 8 BBall schools who don't want to add teams like UCF, SMU, etc to the BBall side. And two that the BE could lose its BCS bid. Now if you are a school like HOU why would you go to the BE? It would be for BBall and a BCS auto bid. Well if the BBall schools don't want your BBall team and the BCS bid goes away, why go to the BE? You could go to the MWC and likely get a BCS bid since Boise is there, and not have to travel ass far for games.

At this point the only leverage the BE has is its BBall. However the BBall schools don't want to add teams to dilute its product.

The food's not very good but there's a lot of it.
