I am a frustrated fan like most of us and we need to make a jump up in wins very soon but I think coach Shafer should have one (maybe two) years to show us that he is the guy. I have no expertise to select a division one head coach but CLICK HERE to watch an interview with a fine young man that includes many reasons to keep Schafer for a few seasons. Football wins are important (essential) but so is our positive impact on players like this.

there is no question that HCSS is a really good man, and he recruits terrific kids. Good citizens. Unfortunately, that is only part of the job. it's a very important part, but the part where you coach your kids up, make sound in-game decisions and have the right staff in place are also very important. That is where things have gone south. I hate that I feel a change is necessary, precisely because Shafer is such a good man and the kids love him. But, I do think it's necessary. There are coaches out there who care and do things the right way and also win. We need one of those coaches.

Shafer is doing everything right except for finding ways to win, and sometimes even be competitive, on the field. I love that. That would be very difficult to replace. People forget to mention that this is one of the least penalized Syracuse teams I can remember. So he has that going for him as well.

I am seriously surprised by how badly the secondary has played this year. I thought a strength of Shafer's was coaching this position. I'm scratching my head. Anyway, here's to Syracuse putting on a good show the last 3 games of the season.

No one cares more than I do about SU having a team full of great kids. Shafer shares a lot of credit for cultivating an atmosphere in which those guys can thrive as people.

But SU's staffing a job that requires more than that. When it's spending $20+ million on football every year (and giving ~$1.3 to the head coach), it absolutely has to employ someone who wins more than half his games and has the team competitive in all of them. Shafer hasn't yet succeeded at that and there's reason to think he won't.

I truly hope the next coach is someone who maintains a family atmosphere, encourages the kids in their academic pursuits, sings the alma mater in the end zone, travels in business attire, and generally finds kids like Ishmael and Simmons to speak on camera. But he'll also have to win.

That's a lot to ask before you even get to wins. Find me a coach who will do that. P couldn't do it. GRob couldn't do it. Marrone couldn't do it.

And when I say all those coaches couldn't do it, I don't mean dress in business attire. I mean consistently find kids like Ish, keep kids out of trouble off the field, and set high academic standards.

Guys, we are not close. Its time to move on. As my man Alec Baldwin once said, "Nice guy? I don't give a . Good father? you! Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here - close!"

I know; that's another reason why this whole thing is so disappointing to me (though I'm satisfied with what Marrone did).

I'd like nothing better than for Shafer to succeed in this role.

I really am trying to not sound snarky but his name is spelled 'Shafer'.

EDIT: GoHamSU beat me to it.

You can't find a guy who can have a positive impact on players and also win games?

Why doe sit have to be one or the other. Plenty of football coaches around the country do BOTH!

evaluate at the end of the season is my stance. we get blown out like louisville against ns state or bc its curtains

Then I vote they keep Shafer as head life coach for the team and they go get a football coach to get wins...that seems like a win/win all around!

Every team has good and bad kids. The bad ones don't get interviewed by the school media entities and APR ain't beat nobody PAWWLLLLL

I'm not trying to sound snarky either but he spelled it correctly in the first part so let's think about auto correct instead of trying to make a big deal about it.

Is Shafer really that much more of a leader of men than Dabo Swinney and Jimbo Fisher?

I personally like those two much more than Shafer and not just bc they win but because they don't whine/make excuses in press conferences and curse half the time in sideline interviews.

Yep. It's great.

And fine young men can also be lead to win football games. They aren't mutually exclusive as you alluded to, so hopefully the next man up will take advantage and lead us to consistent Ws.

OK I confess to my spelling error in the body of my post but since my title line was correct one might think I really know how his name is spelled. Not the first or last error I will make in life and one I will not think about after my last period.
