Last week I started a historical analysis of how teams that were ranked #1 during this time period (last week it was the 9th week of the year, 2nd week of January). This week we take a look at the 10th week of the year, the 3rd week of January. I went back and looked at the last 20 years of teams that were ranked #1 at this time period and how their season ended up. I looked at their NCAA seed, round they lost in the NCAA, and I added weeks being ranked #1 (as requested by a few posters last week). Last week there might have been one or two errors in who was ranked #1 during this time period, because I used two different sources (first few years were ESPN, the remaining years were AP). I only used 1 data source for poll archives this week, which only reflected the AP poll. Year; Team; NCAA Seed; Result and Round; Weeks at #1 2011; OSU; 1 seed; L Sweet 16; 1 week 2010; Texas; 8 seed; L First Rd; 2 weeks 2009; Wake Forest; 4 seed; L First Rd; 1 week 2008; UNC; 1 seed; L Final Four; 11 weeks (includes preseason) 2007; Florida; 1 seed; Won NC; 1 week 2006; Duke; 1 seed ; L Sweet 16; 11 weeks 2005; Illinois; 1 seed; L NC game; 7 weeks 2004; Duke; 1 seed; L Final Four; 1 week 2003; Arizona; 1 seed; L Elite 8; 1 week 2002; Duke; 1 seed; L Sweet 16; 1 week (9 total up to that point) 2001; Stanford; 1 seed; L Elite 8; 2 weeks 2000; Cinci; 2 seed; L 2nd Rd; 2 weeks (7 total) 1999; UConn; 1 seed; Won NC; 8 weeks 1998; Duke; 1 seed; L Elite 8; 1 week (3 total) 1997; Kansas; 1 seed; L Sweet 16; 8 weeks 1996; UMass; 1 seed; L Final Four; 5 weeks 1995; UMass; 2 seed; L Elite 8; 3 weeks (4 total) 1994; UCLA; 5 seed; L First Rd; 1 week 1993; Kansas; 2 seed; L Final Four; 2 weeks 1992; Duke; 1 seed; Won NC; 11 weeks

14 out of 20 teams ranked #1 during week 10 of the season went on to get a #1 seed (70%)
8 out of 20 went on to the Final Four (40%)
13 out of 20 got to at least the Elite Eight (65%)
3 out of 20 went on to win the National Championship (Duke 92, UConn 99, UF 07)
Because we will be ranked #1 for the 6th consecutive week on Monday, I looked at the results of teams that had been ranked #1 for 6 weeks or more. There were 8 teams that had been ranked #1 for at least 6 weeks (Duke '92, KU '97, UConn '99, Cinci '00, Duke '02, Illinois '05, Duke '06, UNC '08).

2 out of 8 won the National Championship (Duke 92, UConn 99)
4 out of 8 went to the Final Four
7 out of 8 got #1 seeds in the tourney. The only one that didn't was Cinci in 2000, that got bumped down a seed line after K-Mart broke his leg.
*I will continue to do these weekly analyses as long as we remain #1.
