I am curious if anyone has a clue why Dino has decided to burn Bergeron’s redshirt by playing him on the line for special teams.

I would have liked to see Bergeron be the cornerstone of our OL for 4 years.

To me it seems like Dino wasted a year of playing time unless he plans on starting him the OL the next 5 games.

Yeah, granted the coaches maybe end up having to fulfill promises to players that they'll play right away or something, but when we burn a redshirt on a player that only shows up on specials*, it feels wasteful.

*It's fine if the player would appear exclusively on specials, ie punter, kicker, long snapper.

I get the gist of this thread but he has played more than just special teams.
I can't find a listing of when this has happened on the interweb but I know it's happened.

Maybe we'll see more of him against FSU since 'everyone's job is in jeopardy'

This is a problem as we are trying to get more depth. Wallace last year shoulda redshirted. I’m a fan of redshirting everyone except a Cisco or trill. Especially olineman, but he is Canadian so he may be 20 already. Not sure on this.

Birthday is in Feb 2000, according to cuse.com.
He's going to be buying kegs for everyone as a sophomore.

Hoping he shows up as an "or" this week on the 2 deep, and gets rotated in for some snaps. He certainly looks like he belongs, despite his baby face.

I hate to see guys lose their final year of eligibility due to injury when they redshirted early on for development reasons.

I'd expect P.Davis before him(experience), as it already happened when Alexander was out for a series. I've seen Berg in heavy, which they'd prolly run more if we were in the red zone.

Yeah I figured lol let him play then. Can’t get much worse.

I hate that too obviously but what you are saying is false logic according to the situations we are discussing. The players you are talking about would not even get a chance to play at all that final year and see if they can play healthy. For any freshman that does not redshirt and plays minimally on specials all year, Its essentially like making them injured their entire final season. You should hate that situation much more. I mean how much is the player really gaining and the team gaining for that matter from them playing specials for more than 4 games. You mean to tell me there is not some other second string guy that could do the job at least almost as well? Would certainly rather have those studs as fifth year players.

It may not end up mattering for Bergeron if he ends up playing on the OL this year as the entire line is failing. But if you think he is one of the more talented freshman this is essentially saying you would rather have Bergeron’s contributions on specials this year as a freshman than a 5th year season from a guy like Slayton or a Custis breakout 5th year.

I think a lot of coaches start feeling some pressure like they got to win now and if they do they will just replace them with more talent later. The problem is you end up trading a great 5th year season for a freshman season from another player.

What im saying is you don't know what the future holds - injury wise. If a guy can help in some way now and get some playing experience, he can help the team while continuing his development.
I think in a case like Bergeron, who is physically developed enough to play without undue risk of injury, it might be better to get him playing time to get used to the speed and physicality of the game and save the redshirt in case of injury. I don't espouse blindly redshirting just to preserve future eligibility. For some smaller guys, or a TE or Safety who they want to convert to OL or LB, respectively, who need to develop more physically, it may make sense to use up the redshirt year.
For this reason, I think the coaches usually are in a better position than fans to determine who to redshirt, so I don't get too worked up over it.
