Or the NBC contract to expire. It'll take more than one snub for ND to move.
The expansion of the playoffs will allow ND to never move to a conference unless the ACC decides to cut ties with them in other sports.

Thank God for Wake Forest...The ACC should add Houston and one additional school today to get it to 14 because I think Houston has a ton to add with that market and extension of footprint.
Then if ND does eventually want to join, the ACC should dump the worst performing, least invested school (football wise because that is all that matters) from its conference. Oh wait...

I think the 800 lb. gorilla in the room is if/when the playoffs expand to 8. Seems like that would make everyone (at least in the P5) happy.
Alsacs said:SS has a better chance to get a contract extension today than ND joining a FB conference in the next 6 years. If ND gets the 4 seed over Oklahoma then I think that might push the Big XII to expand. As 11-1 vs. 11-1 is going to hurt OU. As unless Baylor loses another game vs either TCU/Texas then Baylor will be c0-champs with Oklahoma even though the Big XII will recognize Oklahoma as the champion for the committee. Oklahoma and Baylor will be 8-1 but Oklahoma beat Baylor. Also that Texas loss to Oklahoma while ND killed them hurts Oklahoma. Big XII will realize they will need that CCG on Championship weekend to gives its team an extra quality game. 13 vs. 12 games is huge. Last TCU/Baylor claimed if Oklahoma/Texas had their resumes they wouldn't been jumped by Ohio State. Well if Oklahoma doesn't pass Notre Dame it shows TCU/Baylor and Big XII were wrong.
I agree...if they expand to 8 teams and give automatic bids to the P5 Conference Champ, that might finally force ND to join.
I'm not sure about that. IMO, it will take ND getting routinely slighted at 12-0 OR the playoffs being limited to only conference champions. ND has made it very clear that as long as it has access to the playoffs as an independent, it will stay as an independent. All the playoff committee needs to do to get ND into a conference is make a conference championship a pre-requisite to qualify for the playoffs. They won't do that because they know the playoffs will expand to 8 someday and that conference champ pre-requisite will not apply then. Hence, ND is not going indy anytime soon if ever.Actually, the oppose it true. An 8-team playoff keeps ND as a independent forever more.
Why? Because a 12-0 or 11-1 ND team will ALWAYS get into an 8-team playoff. They have 3 open spots to draw from.
As members of the ACC with an interest in having ND join, we should be rooting for the Irish to beat Stanford and for Oklahoma to win out & thus nip ND for the 4th slot (goes without saying, Clemson, Bama or the B10 champ cannot be upset).
BTW, it'll take two slights of an 11-1 ND team to really consider joining the ACC. This year could be #1.
Why do we need to get to 14? The old divisional formatting is on its last legs. The ACC should add Houston and one additional school today to get it to 14 because I think Houston has a ton to add with that market and extension of footprint.

Unfortunately, adding Houston doesn't bring many new viewers in the Houston market to the Big 12 so from a financial perspective it makes little sense. There may be a little political pressure being applied by a billionaire named Fertita but every school has their billionaire.Crusty said:If the Big 12 and/or ND don't get into the playoffs do they finally grow in the towel? Seems that the Big 12 adding a Houston is a no-brainer notwithstanding the animus with UT. As for ND it seems only a matter of time.
The ACC is already at 14.Why do we need to get to 14? The old divisional formatting is on its last legs.
The pressure will come from being ignored by the playoff committee.Unfortunately, adding Houston doesn't bring many new viewers in the Houston market to the Big 12 so from a financial perspective it makes little sense.
