Big East doesn't plan to take buyouts

Not surprised, this is personal for Marinatto. That said, this is usually code for "your buyout offer doesn't have enough zeros".

Not sure he's going to have many choices if WVU forces the issue and leaves. If WVU goes, and a judge doesn't stop it, it'll come down to $$$ damages in court anyway. Neither party will want it to drag on, so they'll settle for some amount. The door would then be open for SU and Pitt to jump without waiting on an OK from Marinatto. Once WVU opens a door the others will go to. That is what Marinatto is afraid of.

Is it just me, or does that photo of Marinatto make you think of THIS guy?

I can understand the BE wanting to keep Cuse & Pitt in conference until the new replacement schools come in starting with football in August 2013. What I don't get is why Marinatto would want to hold them an additional year until fall 2014. Keeping Cuse /Pitt that year just requires the conference to award 2 more shares of the media revenue to those schools. The media pie will be the same for that year if they leave and are replaced. So keeping them just reduces the per team payout for the other schools. Doesn't make any financial sense. I have to think the other member schools would rather split those 2 shares among themselves plus get some amount of additional buyout from Cuse/Pitt and split that booty too. Can anyone explain Marinatto's position other than just being vindictive?

If BE actually did financially sensitive things we wouldn't be in a situation we are in today.

For a serious answer, an AQ bid trumps any short term payout cuts. They will try to do anything in their power to prove that BE deserves to keep its AQ status even if that means having "too many" teams.
