Big Ten to play on Friday nights

Ohio State says it will host a Friday night game every 3 years.
There isn't a stigma now of playing on Friday because these networks are paying insane dollars so they want more windows for broadcasting games.

Not sure why these pampered princess programs cant play on fridays. give me a break . alot of good teams play on Thursday and Friday including top ten teams in the ACC and PAC.

Friday night games are great.

And kind of ironic...isn't the B1G the "all for one and one for all" conference? Been reading for years that they believe the whole is greater than the parts and they've been working together toward common ends for over 100 years. And now some programs are more equal than others.

It's always fun to watch Rutgers get humiliated in front of a national audience.

The funny thing is when they were in the Big East they were complaining about playing Friday night games, and were looking forward to going to the Big Ten so they wouldn't have play anymore on Friday.

I remember when this board was in a meltdown b/c we were going to be playing games on fridays in the BE. It's such a non-issue as far as I'm concerned.

Are the powers that be:

a) too stupid,
b) too greedy, or
c) too arrogant

to see what playing on a million random nights has done to ratings for the NFL?

Yeah - super-dumb. "Its tradition that all our teams play at the same time to limit our visibility, reach, and TV $."

The difference is that the NFL is boring and upsets are rarely gripping/surprising. Anything can happen in college. And the ratings don't matter that much.

Upsets happen all the time in the Nfl, the Bears just beat the Vikings, the Bills beat the Pats. The Giants beat the Cowboys.

Friday night is different. People are out at after work and it's great to be in a bar with a football game on.

I have been to bars on Friday nights, no one is glued in to college football.

I think it has probably more to do with a factor you aren't considering--those schools have 100K attendance stadiums, with statewide following, and playing on Friday nights compromises their fanbase's ability to get there. So I can see why some programs wouldn't want to do it.

All that said, the B1G sucks, in both football and hoops.

There are people who can't get out on a Friday night who appreciate a game and a drink while the kids/wife sleep.

Not me, but people.

I don't buy it. If they are driving across state they will find a way to get there on a Friday night. Ohio State and Penn State will not have attendance problems.

That's an inconvenience to the fanbase, though. And those home games generate lots of $$$, so I wouldn't want to do it either if I were those three.

But we expect these to happen as NFL teams don't go undefeated. When OSU loses to an unranked PSU team, or App State beats Michigan, or Cuse beats VA Tech, it's actually shocking. And when that happens on a weeknight, people tune in when they see the potential for an upset brewing.

If the Jags are up 14-0 in the 3rd quarter, I expect them to lose, and I'm not going to need to turn on that game if there's something better on.

This made me so happy.

Quick story that happened this year. I'm at the bar watching Cuse vs Louisville on Friday night, some drunk redneck Nebraska fan starts running his mouth about how only weak programs and conferences play on Friday just so people will watch them cause no one would watch them on Saturdays blah blah blah Nebraska is the greatest college football program of all time.

Well today the Omaha paper had a story about how for the next 3 years Nebraska will play a Friday night game. Welcome to the club of "Weak programs and conferences" Nebraska.
