What if we took a broad view of the national collegiate football championship? Unlike basketball, there has been no comprehensive playoff, one that would be sure to include all the logical contenders. The BCS was a system for creating a 1 vs. 2 game every year but that’s all it really was. The coaches agreed to vote the winner of that game #1 but the writers didn’t, (thus the split title between LSU and USC in 2003). There’s dissatisfaction even with the four game playoffs. I wondered what the landscape of national championships would look like if we went “Big Tent” and included anyone who had a reasonable claim to it rather than parsing the records of the claimants to come up with a solitary champion. It might create a more complete view of who the top teams and programs were in different eras and overall through the game’s history. It spreads the wealth and gives some schools credit for national champion that wouldn’t otherwise have one. It also gives full credit, rather than partial credit for the greatness of the best programs.

The formula I used is this: Every team voted #1 by the final poll by the writers (AP) or coaches (UPI) has a share of that year’s national championship. So does every BCS or Playoff champion. We want to limit our selections to teams with schedules difficult enough to have finished in the top 5 of either polls, (or who likely would have in a post bowl poll). I’m adding every Top 5 team that had a record as good as a recognized national champion or better to the list. “Record” is defined as losses and ties, since the numbers of games played can vary. I ignored probation because I don’t believe in it: the coaches and players who committed infractions aren’t there anymore. The games that were won were won. (I prefer a system of fines and suspensions.)

Here’s what I came up with:

1936 Minnesota 7-1-0 (AP) + Alabama 8-0-1 + Santa Clara 8-0-0 + Northwestern 7-1-0
