Another week and 'Cuse remains #2 in the Bilas Index. Interestingly, of the best 68 teams as the index projects, 'Cuse has beaten 10 teams- # 9,11,12,13,35,41,46,47,56, and 58...and KY has beaten only 7 of the top 68.
2. Syracuse Orange
Cuse has some interesting statistical anomalies. The Orange shoot fewer free throws than their opponents in league play, which is unusual for a zone team. They are outrebounded by almost four per game and are giving up more than 15 offensive rebounds per game, an offensive rebound percentage of 40 percent by their foes. But Jim Boeheim's team is able to overcome that with more than 21 points per game off of turnovers and 1.24 points for every turnover forced. Opponents are shooting just 35 percent from the field against the Cuse zone, which means if the Orange can avoid fouling and finish defensive possessions with a defensive rebound, there are few teams that can beat them.
Once again it appears are defense is providing the primary reason for 'Cuse wins...can live with that...and in those games where the offense statistics (such as first half against UConn) we are unbeatable!
