This guy probably puts us over in 1989.
Number one recruit in the nation.
JB actually got him to commit and then shenanigans in Chicago occured.

You put him on the 1989 team that swings that Elite 8 game most likely.

Wasn’t that 1989 team one forward short?

It’s a gut punch when you hear these obvious bag drop scenarios.

we were fine at . We had Coleman, Thompson, Owens and even Johnson could play there.

Yeah we were fine there. But if you can get the #1 recruit in the country, Thompson can play guard. Was that the season JB started the season with Owens at guard? Are we talking about 87-88 or 88-89?

our starting lineup was Coleman at C, Owens at PF, Thompson at SF, Sherm at PG, and Roe at 2G with Johnson off the bench.

Ok. Maybe I'm thinking about 89-90.

I wasn't familiar with Liberty so I looked him up. It's weird that he left after his sophomore year to get drafted in the second round. Did he get in trouble or was he given bad advice?

People make fun of the board meme about losing a recruit due to bags, but Liberty got a massive bag -- And he is admitted as such.

Coleman had a bad back and was not 100%.

I think we win if he is 100% but Illinois also had a great team.

If we had made the final four and beaten Michigan, we would have faced a Seton Hall team that we had already beaten three times that season.

Liberty was a very highly acclaimed recruit but in reality his play never came close to matching the hype. That 1989 Illinois team that SU lost to the in the E8 was loaded with players far better than Liberty. In fact Liberty scored two points in that game against SU. If he were on SU's team I don't think he even starts on that 1989 team.

And in the previous year Sherman Douglas was dealing with the flu in the loss to Rhode Island. Couple of bad breaks there.

It was 88-89. Illinois was a great college team. The only guy who ended up being a good pro was Nick Anderson but Kenny Battle, Lowell Hamilton, Steve Bardo and Liberty were all talented. Even though he didn’t score much in that game I think without Liberty we win as the Illinois bench was not good and Liberty was solid defensively and on the boards.

Yeah I just don't see who sits if Liberty were there. He was certainly a better player than Matt Roe but he was not a perimeter shooter like Roe and SU lacked that outside shooting presence other than Roe. I would not sit any of the three front court players in favor of Liberty.

Agreed. I was reviewing it more of if he was not playing for Illinois would we have won the national title or at least that game.

I don’t recall who dropped that bag Bruce Pearl or Jimmy Collins.

Hint: it wasn't Jimmy Collins

That loss to Illinois in the elite 8 was one of the most crushing defeats for me as a fan. We were sooooooo loaded, and I fully expected another final four. And who was the star of Illinois? I remember a guy named Anderson I think , that was awesome for them.
Edit: thanks Scott - Nick Anderson. What a great player.

That was one of those rare NCAA games where I left saying: what a great game. Wish we had won, but we played well and they played well. Wait until next year.

Sir, I went to Illinois and the fact that you left out Kendall Gill is an atrocity! :)
