Powerhouse teams continue to pad their schedules by playing over-matched opponents instead of giving us what we want: powerhouses vs. powerhouses. You sometimes wonder if they aren’t competing with each other to see who can run up the biggest score, more than against the pathetic team they’re actually sharing the field with. In response, I’m going to post a weekly fantasy. I’ll take the two largest offensive scores rolled up by ranked teams and created a game between them by listing all their scoring plays as if they occurred in the same game. WEEK 4: #5 Baylor vs. #6 Notre Dame I was worried LSU might be in Blow-out Bowl #4 but they never got a whiff of it! Instead we get a traditional power against one of college football’s upstarts. FIRST QUARTER 6:02 The Irish draw first blood with a C.J. Prosise 57 yard Run Irish 7 Bears 0 9:13 Seth Russell complete a pass to KD Cannon for 26 yards for a TD to tie it up Irish 7 Bears 7 6:41 Then he finds Jay Lee for 57 yards for a TD to take the elad. Irish 7 Bears 7 3:41 Russell gets his third TD pass of the first quarter to Corey Coleman for 16 yards for a TD Irish 7 Bears 21 0:19 The Golden Domers grind it out to get back in it: DeShone Kizer 7 yard run. Irish 14 Bears 21 SECOND QUARTER 13:12 The Bears can grind it out, too: Shock Linwood run for 11 yards for a TD Irish 14 Bears 28 7:47 And the Irish can pass: Will Fuller 26 Yd pass from DeShone Kizer. Irish 21 Bears 28 6:48 Seth Russell gets #4 to Corey Coleman for 35 yards for a TD. Irish 21 Bears 35 3:21 The Irish forced a punt! C.J. Sanders 50 yard puntrReturn Irish 28 Bears 35 2:49 And here’s #5: Corey Coleman 32 Yd pass from Seth Russell Irish 28 Bears 42 0:06 In the nick of time: DeShone Kizer pass complete to Chris Brown for 7 yards for a TD, Irish 35 Bears 42 THIRD QUARTER 12:02 C.J. Prosise run for 16 yards for a TD to tie it again for the Iriah. Irish 42 Bears 42 11:32 Johnny Jefferson run for 9 yards for a TD to give Baylor the lead again. Irish 42 Bears 49 9:28 The Irish think they’ve tied it up again but…Dexter Williams run for 14 yards for a TD, (Justin Yoon PAT MISSED) Irish 48 Bears 49 8:36 And now #6: Seth Russell pass complete to Lynx Hawthorne for 22 yards for a TD, Irish 48 Bears 56 2:18 Brandon Wimbush run for 58 yards for a TD for the Irsh, who just kicked the extra point. Irish 55 Bears 56 1:12 Russell’s back up gets in the act: Jarrett Stidham pass complete to Ishmael Zamora for 8 yards for a TD Irish 55 Bears 63 FOURTH QUARTER 8:34 The Irish strike back but again opt to kick: Josh Adams run for 70 yards for a TD, (Justin Yoon KICK) Irish 62 Bears 63 2:24 Baylor closes it out with one final score: Terence Williams run for 7 yards for a TD, Irish 62 Bears 70 Comments: Baylor had a ridiculous 793 yards total offense, 427 rushing and 366 passing and 39 first downs. But Notre dame nearly matched it by rushing for 457 yards, passing for 224 for a total of 687 yards and 340 first downs. Seth Russell only passed for 277 yards but he did it on 12 completions on 16 attempts. Half of those completions wound up in the end zone. Shock Linwood ran for 158 yards on 16 carried (9.9 yards a touch) and scored once. (‘Shock’ Linwood). Terrence Williams rushed for 111 yards and a score. Corey Coleman caught 6 passes for 100 yards and, like Russell, half of them hit pay dirt. But they used a lot of guys: 7 ran the ball and 10 caught passes. Deshone Kinzer passed for 207 yards, (15 for 22) and two scores and ran for 42 yards and another. C. J. Proisse ran for 149 yards on 15 carries and scored twice while Josh Adams ran for 133 on 13 tries and scored once. No receiver had more than 5 catches or 57 yards for Notre Dame. We missed a great game! (But not any better than TCU-Texas Tech - And that one really happened!)
